Road Atlanta Vetterans

The picturesque Road Atlanta course, a favorite of Corvette drivers for years, is the site of the team's second ever victory. Claimed in September of 2000 in the Petit Le Mans endurance race, the victory was arguably the team's most dramatic of the season. After racing nearly 1,000 miles and a little over 9 hours, it took a daring pass of the #92 Dodge Viper by Andy Pilgrim in the #4 Corvette C5-R to claim the win. Including that victory, Corvette Racing has won the past three events at Road Atlanta and also holds the all-time GTS qualifying record at the track, which was set by Ron Fellows in 2000 with a record time of 1:18.632 (116.289 mph). The team will return to the circuit later this year for the ALMS season-closing Petit Le Mans.

Fishel named Grand Marshal

GM Racing's retired Executive Director, Herb Fishel, will act as Grand Marshal for the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta. Fishel, who will retire September 1 after 40 years with General Motors, has most recently been on special assignment to GM Service and Parts Operations. "Herb Fishel's influence has been greatly felt in the American Le Mans Series, and we are very pleased that he accepted our invitation to be Grand Marshal for the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta," said Don Panoz, founder of the American Le Mans Series and the owner of Road Atlanta. Fishel most recently received the prestigious "Spirit Of Le Mans" award from the Automobile Club de l'Ouest, organizers of the 24 Hours of Le Mans. He was one of the most important figures in American motorsports during the 20th century and was influential in building GM's rebirth into racing and performance parts with the Corvette and small-block Chevy V-8 engine in the 1950s.

Canadian Express: Road Atlanta via Sonoma via Le Mans

To say that Ron Fellows, driver of the #3 Corvette C5-R, has been busy as of late would be an understatement. The 2002 ALMS drivers' champion helped to post Corvette Racing's fourth-straight podium finish at Le Mans, then immediately flew to Sonoma's Infineon Raceway to star in last weekend's NASCAR Winston Cup event, and then turned around to travel to this weekend's Chevy Grand Prix at Road Atlanta. At the Winston Cup race in Sonoma, Fellows led over 20 laps behind the wheel of a Pennzoil Chevrolet for Dale Earnhardt, Inc. After starting third in the event, he had passed eventual winner Robby Gordon and was leading when an ill-timed caution flag late in the race caught him out on the team's pit strategy and put him well back in the field. After making up some positions once racing resumed, he was hit from behind and spun while coming to take another caution flag. With laps winding down, Fellows fought his way back to finish seventh, the best finish for the #1 Pennzoil car all season and overall the best ever team finish for DEI at Infineon Raceway. To date, Fellows already has an impressive record in NASCAR racing: he has three wins and two poles out of five Busch Series starts and two wins and three poles in 14 Craftsmen Truck Series starts. He will race in the #1 Pennzoil Chevrolet later this season during NASCAR's Winston Cup race at Watkins Glen.

Corvette Leads ALMS Point Standings

Coming off a second consecutive GTS victory at the 12 Hours of Sebring and a fourth straight Le Mans podium finish, Corvette Racing heads into this weekend's Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta at the top of the ALMS point standings. The driver and manufacturer standings are as follows:
