Corvette Racing sets fastest practice time in Atlanta
Ron Fellows posts best GTS time using last year's championship-winning car
BRASELTON, Ga. The General Motors Chevrolet Corvette Racing team set the fastest practice time during Friday's 90-minute session before the Chevy Grand Prix of Atlanta. Ron Fellows, driving the #3 Chevrolet Corvette C5-R, posted a best time of 1:20:940, or 112.973 mph.
"After setting the fastest time in practice today using last year's cars, we are guardedly optimistic for the race on Sunday," said Doug Fehan, GM's Program Manager for Corvette Racing. "Our drivers wish we had our new Corvettes to race this weekend, but we'll soldier on with these cars, which captured last year's ALMS crown and also won the 12 Hours of Sebring this year. While we weren't afforded the chance to test here this week, as our competitors did, our team worked very hard today and we look forward to qualifying tomorrow."
Corvette Racing's two new chassis, posting a fourth-straight podium finish at the 24 Hours of Le Mans less than two weeks ago, will debut in the ALMS in the end of July at Sonoma's Infineon Raceway. Attributing today's fast time in last year's cars to improved aerodynamic setup and driver experience, GM Racing engineers look forward to this weekend's race.
"The best part about today is that I still think we can squeeze more out of these cars," said Steve Wesoloski, GM Racing's lead chassis engineer for Corvette Racing. "This is a good race pace for us and I think our new rear wing is really giving us some added grip. If we can make the cars a bit more comfortable for our drivers we should be well prepared for the rest of the weekend."
The Corvette Racing team takes to the track on Saturday for practice and qualifying sessions, before starting the 2-hour, 45-minute Chevy Grand Prix at 3:00 p.m. on Sunday.
