BRASELTON, Ga., September 30, 2006 - Petersen Motorsports/White Lightning Racing continues to have an ever-changing Petit Le Mans. The defending event winners of the GT2 class currently runs third, one lap down to the class leader but on that same lap with the third-place entry. Patrick Long sits behind the wheel of the No.31 MMPIE/PAWS/Michelin Porsche 911 GT3 RSR as the race enters its fifth hour. Despite several caution periods the race continues to run ahead of the time limit and is expected to run the 1,000 miles of the Road Atlanta facility before the ten hour time limit.
The team suffered one puncture in the third hour while Jörg Bergmeister was behind the wheel resulting in a spectacular save by the German that avoided sure wall contact. Bergmeister was able to limp the Porsche back to pit lane where the team was already waiting for a scheduled stop that lap. Long took over the wheel and continued to hold fourth-place before a competitor's pit stop moved them into the top-three with nearly a minute lead over fourth.
Currently, in the GT2 point standings, Bergmeister's closest rival for the driver title sits in seventh following contact on the track and an extended repair. They are 11 laps down to the class leader and 10 down to the No. 31. The same scenario stands in the team championship chase where the Michael Petersen-owned team entered the event 16 points in arrears to the leading team, just as Bergmeister does.
