(Sebring, FL 3/19/00) -- Lynx Racing has had a mixed and interesting beginning to the 2000 season. It started with a win as team manager Steve Cameron brought his TrackMagic kart home first in the 80cc shifter class at the first of a four-race series of International Karting Federation (IKF) races at the Dixon Raceway in Northern California. "We tried out the new TrackMagic chassis and were faster at Dixon than we've ever been before," says Cameron. "This isn't a major series of races, but it's still nice psychologically for the team to start the season off with a win. Everyone has worked very hard in the off-season, and whatever the results of any individual race, we're looking for a very strong performance from Lynx drivers this season." Good to have a philosophical long view, especially in light of the kind of weekend Lynx drivers Mike Conte and Sara Senske had during the Superflow 12 Hours of Sebring. It started off well enough with Conte and co-drivers Randy Pobst and Bruno Lambert qualifying their Alex Job Racing Porsche second in the GT class and not merely holding the lead for just under three hours, but actually pulling away from the factory team cars. On lap 59 however, before Conte ever got into the car, the brand-new, factory-built engine suffered a sudden failure. "We're two for two in the thirty-six hours of Florida," said Conte. "The engine failed while we were leading in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, and now at Sebring. We're obviously a little disappointed, me particularly because this is probably my last race in the Porsche until Daytona next year and its not a taste I'm going to like having in my mouth for twelve months. Porsche normally produces an extremely competitive, highly reliable car and engine, and Bruno and Randy will no doubt do well during the rest of the ALMS season. As for myself, I'm going to focus totally on my CART Toyota Atlantic program with Lynx Racing, which starts next weekend with a double-header at the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami at Homestead." The GT class at the Superflo 12 Hours of Sebring was won by the Barbour Racing Porsche of Dirk Mueller and Lucas Luhr. The duo started 25th overall and finished 10th overall and first in class. The win comes 20 years to the day after Dick Barborur's last win -- in which he was a driver rather than a team owner -- at Sebring. Sara Senske started her first race as a driver in the Barber Dodge Pro Series with practice times that were within 2/10ths of putting her in the top-10, but a new set of tires put on for qualifying gave the car a massive push that relegated her to 21st on the qualifying grid. On the first lap of the 18-lap race, she got a good start, passed some cars, but ran into the back of a car ahead of her that swerved across the track and jammed on its brakes. "He came out of nowhere and I just couldn't avoid hitting him and bending my front wing," says Senske. "The car handled just terrible after that, and I had the challenge of making the best of things to adapt to the handling and get the brake bias adjusted so the fronts wouldn't lock up every time I went into a turn. Now that I know what a Pro Series race is like, I'll be better prepared mentally for the next one. My next race is at Homestead on the same weekend as the Atlantic team, and because the Star Mazdas I drove for two years had a totally different schedule, this will be the first time in my three years with Lynx that I've raced in front of the whole team. I'm looking forward to it, but it also adds some pressure because I want to do well in front of Peggy Haas and Jackie Doty, the Lynx team owners that have given me this wonderful chance." The Barber Dodge Pro Series race at Sebring was won by Nilton Rossoni of Curitiba, Brazil when he passed pole-sitter Michael Valiente on lap 17 of the 18-lap race. Valiente, last year's Barber series co-rookie of the year, tested impressively with the Lynx team for the Atlantic ride that was ultimately won by fellow Canadian David Rutledge. Lynx would like to congratulate Michael on his fine drive and hope he has a great season. Lynx Racing drivers David Rutledge, Mike Conte and Sara Senske will all be competing at Homestead-Miami Speedway during the CART Toyota Atlantic and Barber Dodge Pro Series support races at the Marlboro Grand Prix of Miami, March 25-26. 2000 marks the 10th anniversary of Lynx Racing, one of the most unique organizations in auto racing today. Created and owned by two women, Peggy Haas and Jackie Doty, Lynx is both a championship-winning racing team and a uniquely successful driver development program that focuses on a driver's spiritual and psychological growth in addition to their on-track skills.
