Dyson, Goodyear capture overall ALMS victory st Sonoma
SONOMA, Calif. (July 27, 2003) -- Butch Leitzinger and James Weaver teamed up to drive their Goodyear-equipped Dyson Racing Lola EX257 MG to victory in the Infineon Grand Prix of Sonoma American Le Mans Series race at Infineon Raceway.
It was the first time an LMP 675-class car won overall victory in an ALMS race and it was the first victory for the team in the series. The stunning victory came after the team scored another first, becoming the first LMP 675 team to win the overall pole position in qualifying. Earlier in the season, a Dyson entry had the best time in practice and a major storm system forced the cancellation of qualifying.
Leitzinger said after qualifying, "Goodyear has given us an excellent tire and I think we've got a great setup for tomorrow's race."
He was right and not just about his car. The second car in the Dyson stable, driven by Andy Wallace and Chris Dyson, finished seventh overall.
Goodyear teams won two classes in the race. The Corvette driven by Ron Fellows and Johnny O'Connell won the GTS class victory and remained undefeated in ALMS races in the class this season. The Fellows/O'Connell car finished eighth overall and the sister Corvette, driven by Oliver Gavin and Kelly Collins, finished second in class and ninth overall.
The Dyson and Corvette teams race exclusively on Goodyear tires. Dyson Racing has teamed with Goodyear to win races in various racing series for more than two decades. Corvette Racing has raced exclusively on Goodyear tires since the team's inception.
Gavin set a GTS record in qualifying, averaging 100.520 mph as he zipped his Corvette around the twisty Sonoma track. The record he broke was set by Fellows in another Corvette two seasons earlier.
