SONOMA, Calif. (July 13, 2004) -- As Johnny Mowlem and his ACEMCO Motorsports teammates head for their July 18 American Le Mans Series race at Infineon Raceway, they know their work is cut out for them.
Mowlem and co-driver Terry Borcheller pilot the ACEMCO Saleen S7R, competing in the GTS class. The GTS class is a markedly competitive group, but Mowlem and Borcheller go into the event tied for second place in points.
"There is an enormous amount of camaraderie amongst the whole ACEMCO team from (team owner) Jeff Giangrande down, but there is also a fierce determination to win," said Mowlem.
The twisty 2.53-mile, 12-turn Infineon circuit has been a part of the ALMS schedule since 1999 and is a place where Saleen racecars have had success. The race comes at a time when the ACEMCO team has a lot of momentum, having recorded three straight podium finishes in GTS and two straight top-10 finishes overall.
The competition will be formidable as the usually strong two-car Corvette team will add a third entry, co-driven by NASCAR star Dale Earnhardt Jr. "I think that Infineon will be a great event, especially with Dale Jr. and Boris Said joining the GTS fight in another Corvette," Mowlem said. "I'm a little cautious about predicting that we will get the GTS win, but I certainly expect us to continue closing the gap."
One of Britain's most successful and personable sportscar drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2003, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award, a ranking of all British racers competing in international series, including Formula One. A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
