MOWLEM, ACEMCO TEAM TAKE THIRD IN CLASS AT INFINEON
SONOMA, Calif. (July 19, 2005) -- Johnny Mowlem and his ACEMCO Motorsports teammates finished third in the GT1 class and ninth overall in the Infineon Technologies Grand Prix of Sonoma at Infineon Raceway.
Although this was yet another third place finish for Jeff Giangrande's ACEMCO team, this time the team had made a real step forward and the race gave a graphic illustration of what makes sports car racing so interesting.
On Saturday Mowlem turned a monster lap to qualify the Saleen S7R only 3 tenths of a second from the GT1 pole and in the race he managed to keep things interesting by keeping the Corvettes within reach for the first hour. His co-driver Terry Borcheller then took over and drove their Saleen S7R to a podium finish, beating the factory-backed Maserati team and a privately entered Chevrolet Corvette team in the process.
"I was hoping at the start to maybe be able to hang onto the Corvettes and in the beginning I could, just," Mowlem said. "However, then I caught traffic in the just the wrong places for about 3 laps and lost over 6 seconds and they edged away. We were still less than 20 seconds behind at the first round of pit stops, which was reasonably okay. In Terry's final stint they gave him a splash of fuel and tyres and he then drove a storming 30 minutes to the end."
Mowlem said the race at Infineon showed how strong the ACEMCO team is.
"We were still on the lead lap and in touch with both works Corvettes at the end and it just goes to show how much progress the ACEMCO team has made that we comprehensively beat the factory Maserati by two laps. After all, at the last race at Lime Rock they were faster than us and it was everything I could do to keep them behind me for the third place, and now here at Sonoma we could just drive away from them."
Mowlem added. "If we can keep this progress up, we may be able to get to that top step of the podium yet!"
The 2.53-mile Infineon track hosted the fifth race of the season for the ALMS teams. The next race will be the July 30 event at Portland International Raceway.
One of Britain's most successful and personable sports car drivers, Mowlem started his career behind the wheel at age 19. In 2004, he finished fourth in the British Racing Drivers Club Gold Star Award voting for international British racers. A married father of two, Mowlem was raised in Majorca, Spain. He has earned university degrees in economics and Spanish. More information on Mowlem is available at www.johnnymowlem.com.
