Sharpe delighted with Morgan's Sebring finish
Adam Sharpe was delighted to finish the Sebring 12 Hours ALMS event in the Morgan Works Racing Aero 8, the 19 year old student from Oxford leading co- drivers Neil Cunningham and Keith Ahlers to a 20th placed finished overall and 10th in the GT category. Apart from a brief shake-down test at Donington Park two weeks ago, the classic American race was the first outing for the factory Morgan Aero 8 since the Le Mans 1000kms event last November but, as lead driver, Sharpe was impressed with the car's consistency throughout the event. Racing on Yokohama tyres for the first time, the Morgan once again demonstrated that reliability is one of its strongest assets and Sharpe is confident that there is much more to come.
"It was a strong performance, not only in terms of running strongly right to the end but also in terms of our performance against some of the highly developed cars in the GT class," he said. "We knew that the car was strong, but I think to come to Sebring and finish the 12 hours without any major problem is a credit to everyone at Morgan Works Racing. A big thank you must also go to all at Yokohama whose help was invaluable throughout the weekend. Neil, Keith and I worked well together and I think it's given us a good platform on which to build for the future. If the team can secure the additional backing which we are seeking, I have no doubt that we can develop the Morgan Aero 8 GT into a car capable of competing against the best in class.
"The race also confirmed my determination to focus my career on sports car racing. It was an incredible event to take part in and the calibre of entry was very high. Physically, it was not as bad as I expected, but it's a demanding track and we had to keep our wits about us with the sports prototype cars coming through in traffic."
Sharpe has accepted an invitation to join the Panoz squad today at Sebring, where the impressive Panoz Esperante is testing, as he pursues further opportunities in ALMS beyond his commitments to Morgan Works Racing's programme.
"I am staying at Sebring to join Panoz at today's test and see what opportunities exist as I'm keen to get more GT experience and race in a prototype as soon as I can. If I can develop a mix of races with Morgan Works Racing and something with a sports prototype operation, that would be ideal."
