DRAMA IN SEBRING AS SUNSET APPROACHES

Audi's streak of eight consecutive overall wins at Sebring International Raceway was in serious jeopardy in the closing hours of the 56th annual Mobil 1 Twelve Hours of Sebring presented by Fresh from Florida. Penske Racing's Timo Bernhard led in his Porsche RS Spyder with three hours remaining.

Bernhard was the first of six LMP2 drivers on the timing sheets, a first in race history. He was nearly a full lap up on Chris Dyson in the first of Dyson Racing's two RS Spyders. Marino Franchitti was a lap behind his teammate in the second Dyson Porsche.

Acuras ran fourth through sixth overall with the Lowe's Fernandez Racing Acura ARX-01b of Luis Diaz running eight seconds behind Franchitti.

Allan McNish ran seventh overall and first in LMP1 in the lead Audi R10 TDI. The entry, also driven by Dindo Capello and Tom Kristensen, spent considerable time in the pits replacing the front discs. By the time McNish returned, the Audi was three laps down.

The second Audi of Marco Werner, Lucas Luhr and Mike Rockenfeller was second in class by 11 laps down after having to replace a turbo in the middle of the afternoon. Intersport Racing's E85-fueled Lola B06/10-AER ran third in class.

Corvette Racing's trio of Ron Fellows, Johnny O'Connell and Jan Magnussen held a commanding nine-lap lead in GT1 with a nearly flawless run. Fellows held a nine-lap lead over Olivier Beretta in the sister car that he is sharing with Oliver Gavin and Max Papis. The No. 4 entry lost time early in the race when the crew had to change a driveshaft.

Bell Motorsports' Aston Martin DBR9 was running third in class with Antonio Garcia at the wheel.

Flying Lizard Motorsports held the top two positions in GT2 with the No. 45 Porsche 911 GT3 RSR of Wolf Henzler holding a one-lap edge over the No. 44 sister car of Alex Davison. Henzler and the Lizards took the lead near the halfway point when Risi Competizione's Jaime Melo ran hot in Turn 7 while leading in the No. 62 Ferrari F430 GT and collided with the second-place Porsche of Dirk Werner and Farnbacher Loles Racing.

The collision resulted in the retirement of both cars. It also put the VICI Racing Porsche of Nathan Swartzbaugh in third place.

Flying Lizard is trying to win at Sebring for the first time. It has finished on the GT2 podium the last three years with two straight runner-up finishes.
