Team Ascari Ready For Sebring 50th

Sebring International Raceway, Florida– 14th March 2002: Team Ascari, the only British-based sports prototype team entered for this weekend's 50th anniversary Sebring 12 Hours, is making final preparations for Saturday's race. The team have already completed three practice sessions on the bumpy and historic track, amongst the Florida orange groves, and this afternoon will partake in race qualifying to determine their place on the starting grid.

In this morning's practice session, reigning Formula 3000 Champion Justin Wilson showed that he has taken to sportscar racing by recording the 11th fastest time of 1m53.268s (117mph). He shares the car with fellow Brits, Christian Vann and Ben Collins. The team's second KZR1-Judd recorded the 16th fastest time before stopping early with a clutch problem. The car is driven by Werner Lupberger, T.J. Bell and Kristian Kolby.

Banbury-based Team Ascari, in their first Sebring outing, face tough opposition from such teams as the factory Audis - which have won the race for the past two years - the brand new Cadillac prototypes and the Daytona 24 Hours winning Dallara amongst the 55 car entry.

Ian Dawson, Race Director, Team Ascari:
We're happy with our progress and the changes we have made to the aero package. Although we've tested here, conditions can change so quickly. All the drivers have had time in the car, now we are concentrating on qualifying.

Ben Collins will qualify the No. 21 - the British car - while Silverstone-based South African Werner Lupberger, who qualified on the front row of last month's Daytona 24 Hours, will undertake qualifying duty in the No. 19.

The 12 Hours of Sebring, which will be watched by an anticipated crowd of over 100,000, commences at 10.30am local-time.
