1st Qualifying Friday
Round 3, American Le Mans Series
12th May 2000, Silverstone, Great Britain
Difficult start
Munich/Silverstone. BMW works driver Bill Auberlen (USA) qualified the BMW V12 LMR he shares with Frenchman Jean-Marc Gounon in provisional sixth position after the first of two qualifying sessions for the season's third round, held at Silverstone, England. Auberlen lapped the 3.187 mile (5.141 km) circuit in 1 minute 38.697 seconds in the No. 43 car. Finn JJ Lehto, who drives the No 42 BMW prototype with German Jorg Muller, lapped in 1 minute 39.416 seconds and is listed on provisional ninth position.
Hans-Joachim Stuck, who drives with Boris Said and Johannes van Overbeek in the new BMW M3 model of BMW Team PTG, was watching qualifying from beside the track. Boris Said qualified the No. 6 car in 1 minute 55.846 seconds for provisional eighth position in GT class.
BMW Motorsport Team Manager Charly Lamm: "Of course the sixth and ninth positions are disappointing for us. Obviously we are not consistent. During the test in Monza and even in the practice session this morning here in Silverstone the cars seemed to be reasonably well balanced, but that was not the case any more in qualifying. We have not yet managed to get the cars right for Silverstone. From tests here we definitely know that we can go quicker."
Bill Auberlen #43: "We have not found the right balance - it is good for one turn, but doesn't work for the next three in a row. But we have a very strong team and they will get the most out of it, as these guys always do. I really like the Silverstone circuit - it has a bit of everything, slow and quick parts and many different kind of corners."
Jean-Marc Gounon #43: "Bill managed a very good lap time with a new set of tyres in the morning and so we wanted him to qualify the car. Our test in Monza was very promising. I was much happier with the car there than I am here now. We will have to work hard in the one hour of practice tomorrow in order to improve the car for the final qualifying and the race."
JJ Lehto #42: "Either I have understeer or I have oversteer - I just could not get it right. We definitely have to find a better solution."
Jorg Muller #42: "We have the same sort of problems as we already experienced at the first round at Sebring. The car is quite aggressive and therefore difficult to keep under control. But as there is another qualifying tomorrow, and the BMW V12 LMR is reliable, I am confident of collecting some points here."
