Turner Joins Team Modena for Sebring
Team Modena have finalised the driver line-up for the Mobil 1 12-Hours of Sebring next month with Darren Turner now joining Antonio Garcia and Liz Halliday in the team's Aston Martin DBR9 for the classic Florida event. For Turner it will be a return to the car he co-drove to victory at the Nurburgring in 2005, while his unrivalled Aston Martin race experience will further strengthen the already rapid Team Modena driver squad.
The race will be the first US appearance for Team Modena, and the first event in a season which will see them contest the Le Mans Series of races and the Le Mans 24-Hours (entry permitting) with their GT1 class DBR9. While Halliday - racing in her home country at Sebring - and Spaniard Garcia have been confirmed for the full LMS campaign and provisionally Le Mans, at present Turner will be with the team for just this one race, which is the opening round of the American Le Mans Series.
"I am delighted to have Darren joining Team Modena for Sebring," says Team Modena co-owner Rik Bryan, "we now have a strong line-up and should be able to take the battle to the Corvettes on their home turf. It's a famous race and we are very excited to be going there in such strong shape.
"Darren has phenomenal experience in the DBR9 and has won Sebring with the car - such experience will be a huge addition to the already strong team of Antonio and Liz. In addition, it will be nice to have Darren back in DBR9/101 since he drove it to its first race win in September 2005 - a race that I will never forget!"
Turner was one of the crew who drove an Aston Martin DBR9 to victory at Sebring in 2005 on the model's race debut, and the Briton is well aware of the unique challenges the 3.7-mile circuit presents - and also what is required to win there.
"Sebring 2005 was the very first race for the DBR9 and no one really expected us to win," says Turner. "It's such a hard circuit for cars and drivers as it's so bumpy and can also be very slippery, but we just chipped away all week at making progress with the car and finding a good set up for the race, getting better and better each day, and it really paid off.
"That's exactly what we'll be aiming for with Team Modena, and I hope I'll be able to bring all my Aston Martin experience to bear to help them achieve success in their first ALMS race."
"I'm really pleased Darren is joining us for Sebring," said Halliday. "He has a huge amount of experience of racing the Aston Martin and it can only be good to have someone who has won there before in the car. Between Darren and Antonio I have two really strong team-mates for Sebring."
