Romain Dumas, the third ORECA driver in the Petit Le Mans
The Team ORECA-Matmut-AIM is counting on a trio consisting of Olivier Panis, Nicolas Lapierre and Romain Dumas, 2-times ALMS winner, on its trip to the USA for the Petit Le Mans.
The Team ORECA-Matmut-AIM will cross the Atlantic after the Le Mans Series final on the Silverstone circuit to race in the Petit Le Mans, in which one of the ORECA 01-AIMs is taking the fight to Audi, Peugeot and Acura. The Signes-based team is relying on a trio of talented rivers for this new challenge. Olivier Panis and Nicolas Lapierre have been with the squad for 2 seasons, and in the USA they will be backed up by Romain Dumas. The driver from Alès, an American Le Mans Series regular, is having his first outing with ORECA. He has been a works Porsche driver since 2003, and he became the first Frenchman to win the ALMS title in 2007 and 2008. He has also won the Spa 24 Hours, the Nurburging 24 Hours on 3 occasions, as well as scoring a third place in the Le Mans 24 Hours.
"I've been talking to Hugues de Chaunac for several seasons," says Dumas. "When he told me that there was an opportunity to drive in the ALMS again at the wheel of a very competitive prototype, I didn't hesitate for a second. All the ingredients were there, all the more so as I love the Petit Le Mans. ORECA's given itself what it takes to fulfill its ambitions and their presence in the USA is proof of this. The team's already one of the front-runners in Europe and now it's going to tackle the Americans." Romain will have his first run in the ORECA 01 in a private test session on the Sunday before the race, and his experience will be a great help to the French team.
His experience and his profile were what attracted Hugues de Chaunac. "Romain has the qualities we're looking for. He's quick, a fighter, qualities that are common to all our drivers. This event is going to be a real eye-opener for the whole team, and it's an advantage to be able to count on someone who already knows the place and who's used to racing in America."
Private testing for the Petit Le Mans will take place on 19th-20th September. While Panis and Lapierre will share the ORECA 01 on Saturday, Dumas will join them on Sunday after a round with Porsche, part of his regular programme. The German firm has released him specially for the event.
