single focus

Orbit Racing will field just one car in the American Le Mans Series race in Trois-Rivières, Que., on Aug. 3. Peter Baron of Deerfield Beach, Fla., and Porsche factory driver Marc Lieb of Niefern, Germany, will drive the No. 43 YES Network Porsche 911 GT3 RS. The No. 42 Classic Industries Porsche will be back on track in August.

Lieb returns to Orbit Racing after scoring an overall win at the 24 Hours of Spa in Belgium last weekend. "I'm looking forward to racing with Marc again," Baron said. "Hopefully, we can build on the momentum Marc has going from his win in the 24-hour race at Spa."

The Orbit drivers wowed the crowd at the 24 Heures du Mans this year, when they used a giant slingshot to catapult thousands of Orbit Racing t-shirts into the grandstand. Baron hopes to reward the fans in Trois-Rivières, as well. "Trois-Rivières is one of the highlights of the year, thanks to the great fans," he said. "We'll have lots of t-shirts to send into what will be one of the largest crowds of the year."

setup specialist

Marc Lieb knows the importance of setting up a race car for peak performance. As a young racer, he served as both driver and mechanic on his open-wheel race cars, gaining technical insight that helps him provide precise feedback to team engineers. That experience will be valuable on the 1.52-mile Trois-Rivières street circuit, where mechanical setup is critical.

"There are so many things you have to look after, especially the springs, dampers and roll bars," he explained. "The main thing is that the car is easy to drive, especially on circuits where you don't have gravel or grass [runoff areas], just the wall. If you hit the wall, it's not fun! The average speed won't be high, so aerodynamics are not as important. It's really important to work on the mechanical side, to get as much mechanical grip as possible."

Victory Laps

Orbit Racing introduced its charitable program - Victory Laps for Victory Junction - at the ALMS race in Sonoma, Calif., last week. In a joint effort with Scalextric USA, Michelin and Porsche Cars North America, Orbit presents a slot-car competition to support the Victory Junction Gang Camp initiated by NASCAR driver Kyle Petty and his wife Pattie for children who have chronic or life-threatening illnesses. (Due to logistical problems, the Victory Laps competition will not be held in Trois-Rivières.)

Luc Demoulin of Versailles, France, was the first competitor on the Victory Laps track. At age five, he is already a committed sports-car fan. His family has often attended the 24 Heures du Mans, where Orbit Racing scored a second-place GT finish this year.
