Early race incident derails GMG Racing in Salt Lake City
July 12, 2010 (Santa Ana, Calif.) -- The story for GMG Racing in the American Le Mans Series of 2010 has been 'fast, but unlucky.' The story, unfortunately, was a familiar one this past weekend at the Larry H. Miller Dealerships Grand Prix of Utah, where the team came home in seventh position after losing a lap early in the race due to a cut tire.
James Sofronas qualified the No. 32 GMG / Spectra Resources Porsche 911 GT3 Cup in sixth position for Sunday's event. Both Sofronas and Curtis had run consistently in the top-five of the class throughout practice, and the duo was very happy with the speed and consistency of their race car.
Curtis started the race for the team and although he ran without problem in the opening lap, the most frantic of the race, he would become a victim of someone else's incident as he ran off-track to avoid an incident involving two other GT-C class cars. The run off the track, however, cut the tire of the Porsche and Curtis was forced to drive slowly around the 4.5 mile course before the car could be serviced by the GMG Racing crew. Although the team performed a quick pit stop, the car went down a lap to the GT-C field and was essentially out of contention 20 minutes into the race.J Although Curtis and Sofronas were on the pace with the leaders throughout the rest of the race, they were unable to make up the lost lap and crossed the finish line in eighth place, but were later promoted to seventh when a car ahead of them was excluded from the results.
b^0x001cIt was quite disappointing, considering the competitiveness of the car and the fact that Bret was very quick during practice and the race," said Sofronas. "The GT-Challenge class is very competitive and when you are forced to go down a lap early in the race like we were, it is next to impossible to make it up. But if we keep having luck go against us, it means that the tide will swing the other way very soon -- so we keep pressing forward until we get better results and more podiums."
Curtis and Sofronas now sit tenth in the GT-C points standings after four of nine series events. They will be back behind the wheel in two weeks at the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix, July 23-24, at Lime Rock Park in Lakeville, Connecticut.
