Frustrating weekend for Robertson Racing in Utah
14/07/2010 - Robertson Racing arrived at Miller Motorsports Park last weekend with high hopes of their best American Le Mans Series presented by Tequila Patron result of the season.
And although there were glimpses of their Ford GT's improved pace at Salt Lake City, a sizeable chunk of bad luck eventually condemned the car of David Robertson, David Murry and Andrea Robertson to 12th in the ultra-competitive GT class.
By the Atlanta team's own admission qualifying didn't quite go according to plan and the car lined up 10th for Sunday's race.
And come race day, it didn't take long for the first taste of how the following two and three quarter hours would pan out. Indeed, before the lights had even gone out, the RSR Jaguar which shared the 11th row with Robertson Racing, had smashed into the back of the Ford GT.
Fortunately neither car suffered any lasting damage, allowing Murry to chase down those ahead once the race went green.
And almost immediately the updated machine began to demonstrate the progress made during the past six weeks, improved aerodynamics, tyre testing and an all-new Elan V8 engine all contributing to Murry's impressive fight through the field.
Having disposed of one factory Corvette, he was right with Toni Vilander's Ferrari before the pair made contact which sent the Ford GT spinning out of third place. Incredibly, the same car would be involved in a similar incident later in the race when Robertson Racing again came off second best.
The car was by now bearing the scars of its weekend's work and, having dropped off the lead lap while recovering, there was nothing that either David or Andrea Robertson could do over their final two stints to return it to the top ten, eventually finishing 12th.
While the result wasn't what the team had hoped for, the car's overall speed suggests that there's much more to come. Notably, Utah marked Robertson Racing's 14th consecutive race finish, an impressive feat for a privateer team's car which spent most of the race being targeted by rivals.
"On the one hand we're a little disappointed with the result given how hard the team's worked over the last month," said Team Manager Andrew 'H' Smith. "It would have been nice to have something tangible to show for their efforts. But on the other hand it's clear to see where we've made big steps forward. Our average lap times were a couple of seconds faster than when we raced here last season and to be fighting with the works Corvettes and Ferraris, who have much greater resources than us, is a real credit to everyone at the team. Hopefully we'll have a bit better luck at Lime Rock in a couple of weeks."
Robertson Racing will be back in action at the American Le Mans Northeast Grand Prix at Lime Rock Park, Connecticut, in two weeks time (July 23/24).
