PICKERINGTON, Ohio (Sept. 4, 2003) -- Ricky Carmichael earned his fourth straight AMA Chevy Trucks 250 U.S. Motocross Championship with his victory at Steel City Raceway in Delmont, Pa. The 23-year-old from Havana, Fla., becomes the first rider to win four AMA 250 Motocross Championships and adds yet another No.1 plate to his already well-stocked collection. Since coming into AMA Motocross full time in 1997, Carmichael has won a championship every year. This year marks his seventh straight season of being an AMA National Motocross champ. He was three-time AMA 125 Motocross Champion from 1997 to 1999 and has held on to the top position in the 250 class since 2000. In all, Carmichael now holds a record 10 AMA championships -- seven in motocross and three in supercross.
The 2003 AMA National Motocross season was another year of domination for Carmichael. He won nine of the 11 rounds and 15 of the 22 motos in the 250 class. The season was also significant in that Carmichael passed legendary Jeremy McGrath on the AMA's all-time combined motocross and supercross wins list with a victory at High Point Raceway in Mt. Morris, Pa., in May. Carmichael ended the season with a total of 96-career AMA wins.
"My championships have come so fast," Carmichael said. "These last four years have flown by. I've been so busy concentrating on racing that it's hard to grasp some of the things I've been able to accomplish. Kevin (Windham) made it tough for me this year and that makes this championship even more fulfilling."
Carmichael and Windham had some of the best battles in the history of the series this season. Windham won six motos and two overalls in his return to racing after a year-and-a-half absence. The only other rider to manage a 250 moto win this year was Yamaha's Tim Ferry at Budds Creek, Md.
Carmichael said at Steel City that he would now turn his attention to wrapping up a successful 2003 by representing the U.S. in this year's Motocross des Nations set for Zolder, Belgium on Oct. 4.
