LAKE ODESSA TO HOST AMA FORD QUALITY CHECKED FLAT TRACK CHAMPIONSHIP

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (June 27, 2006) -- I-96 Speedway, in Lake Odessa, Mich., will host round seven of the 2006 AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track Championship this Saturday, July 1. This weekend it will again be the Ford Quality Checked Grand National Twins Championship. The powerful Grand National motorcycles are capable of circulating the half-mile I-96 Speedway semi-banked dirt oval at a rate of about 22 seconds per lap.

Ken Coolbeth, the Harley-Davidson factory rider from Warren, Conn., is the defending winner of the race. Coolbeth is hoping to be the first rider to win back-to-back nationals at Lake Odessa. Coolbeth is ranked ninth in the standings coming into this Saturday's race.

Defending and seven-time AMA Grand National Champion Chris Carr leads the Grand National Twins points after three rounds. Carr, of Fleetwood, Pa., will be trying to earn his first victory at Lake Odessa. Carr rides for, and owns, the Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford / Lancaster H-D / KTM squad.

Carr has an 11-point lead on second ranked Rich King, the veteran Harley-Davidson factory rider. King is holding off a closely matched group of five riders who are within four points of each other. The other riders in that tight-knit battle for second include Joe Kopp, Dominic Beaulac and Michigan riders Bryan Smith and Jay Springsteen.

Beaulac is coming off his first AMA Grand National victory this past Saturday in Lima, Ohio. He is hoping to follow in countryman Steve Beattie's footsteps to become the second Canadian to win the national at Lake Odessa.

"It's amazing, it's unbelievable," said the 29-year-old Beaulac of his victory last weekend on a Carl Patrick-tuned XR-750 Lombardi Harley-Davidson. "It's going to take some time for this to sink in. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going."

Lake Odessa has hosted AMA Grand National races since 1993. After a seven-year break the series returned to the track last season.

Michigan will be a hotbed of AMA National racing activity this weekend. In addition to the Saturday Grand National in Lake Odessa, a round of the AMA Toyota Motocross Championship takes place on Sunday down the road at Red Bud USA MX in Buchanan. The AMA Supermoto Championship presented by Parts Unlimited will be at the Waterford Hills Road Racing Track just outside of Detroit the following weekend.
