Carr continues to hold slim series lead coming into Sedalia half-mile.
PICKERINGTON, Ohio - Defending AMA Progressive Insurance U.S. Flat Track Champion Chris Carr has led the point standings for most of the season in this year's series, but his 20-point lead over Johnny Murphree is not quite a comfortable enough cushion in Carr's opinion. He will try to build on his series lead this Saturday, August 24, at the State Fair Speedway in Sedalia, Mo. This weekend's race is round 14 of the 20-race series, so the series is making it's turn for the final stretch.
Carr, 35, of Fleetwood, Pa., has ridden his Quality Checked Certified Pre-Owned Ford-sponsored machines to two wins so far this year. That doesn't sound like a lot of wins in 13 races until you consider that there have been 10 winners in series so far this year. Carr and Nicky Hayden are the only two in the championship to have multiple wins this year. With so much parity in the series it has been one of the closest in years. Yet Carr has been the most consistent rider on the tour and has managed to expand his lead ever so slightly in the last month.
Carr, Joe Kopp and Rich King all come into Sedalia past winners on the State Fair Speedway's Half-mile. Carr is the defending winner.
The battle for second in the series is a tight one between Murphree, Bryan Bigelow and Kevin Varnes. All three riders need a good result at Sedalia to have a chance to chop away at Carr's series lead.
A round of the Harley-Davidson Sportster Performance Series will also run at Sedalia on Saturday. Jared Mees, of Honey Brook, Pa., has opened up a 42-point lead in that championship after winning three of the last five rounds. Texan Scott Scherb and Illinois rider James Hart are in a tight chase over second in the Sportster series with just three points separating them.
This weekend will be an emotional return to Sedalia. It was at this track a year ago that motorcycle racing lost one of its greatest riders in Will Davis. His memory will certainly be on the minds of the riders and fans at this weekend's event.
