SPEED RETURNS TO LAS VEGAS FOR LIVE COVERAGE OF 2007 AMP'D MOBILE SUPERCROSS SERIES SEASON FINALE
HISTORICAL EVENING COULD MARK A NEW ERA IN SUPERCROSS COMPETITION
SPEED, the definitive network for motor sports and the automotive lifestyle, will once again provide LIVE coverage of the Amp'd Mobile AMA Supercross season finale from Sam Boyd Stadium in Las Vegas, Nev. On May 5, starting at 10 p.m. ET/7 p.m. PT, SPEED will broadcast both Supercross and Supercross Lites as they crown overall champions for 2007. A one-hour encore presentation of the Supercross race is set for May 6 at 6 p.m. ET/3 p.m. PT.
Heading the broadcast booth will be long-time two wheel play-by-play announcer Ralph Sheheen, joined by 2004 AMA Hall of Fame inductee, Jeff Emig, who will be adding color commentary. Erin Bates will once again cover news and storylines from the paddock.
Rick Miner, SPEED SVP of Production & Network Operations, talked about what has changed since the network's inaugural live broadcast one year ago and how this past year's experiences, including the first live coverage of Anaheim 1 in early January, have enhanced what SPEED has to offer.
"Our understanding of the sport and our relationships with the race teams has grown throughout the course of the year, as well as our ability to work with the event organizers at Live Nation," Miner said. "It has insured our ability to produce a quality production without imposing on the event itself. In addition, our technology and facilities have been of a higher caliber this year."
"Watching an Amp'd Mobile Supercross Series race live is an incredible experience," said Sheheen, who also handled play-by-play duties on that inaugural broadcast. "Not every race fan will get that opportunity, but on SPEED, they can still enjoy the excitement as its happening. It's been a year since SPEED was in Las Vegas to broadcast its first live Amp'd Mobile Supercross, but here we are to do it again and a lot has changed between those two moments in time."
It's no secret that emerging Amp'd Mobile Supercross Series standout James Stewart, who's already scored 11 victories this season, has dominated competition in 2007 and holds a sizable point's lead heading into the homestretch. But this race will also end the Ricky Carmichael era as well. Carmichael has the second most wins within the lineage of Amp'd Mobile AMA Supercross champions.
"History will be made that night, as Stewart, the sport's newest superstar, should take home back-to-back World Supercross titles, while capturing his first ever AMA Amp'd Mobile Supercross World Championship," Sheheen added. "But even more importantly, it will be the night that Supercross passes the torch into a new era. As we have said 'goodbye' to Ricky Carmichael, Stewart has emerged as the face of the sport -- which makes this an important period of time.
"I also don't want to forget about the significance of the Supercross Lites race either because, for the first time this year, the best competitors from the East Coast will be battling the top performers from the West -- we will definitely know where the strength of riders resides," Sheheen continued. "There's been a lot of chatter between the two sides about who's the best, and about who the real competitors are on the Lites side. Ryan Villopoto has been the man to beat on the west coast, while Ryan Morais, Ben Townley and Darcy Lange have battled it out in the east. Bringing the two regions together should make for an intense weekend of racing."
