Stewart Lays Down Back-to-Back Wins in Canada
AURORA, IL. (December 12, 2005) -- In his first-ever Amp'd Mobile World Supercross GP Kawasaki's James Stewart, of Haines City, Fla., rode away from Canada with two consecutive wins and leads the 2005-'06 World Supercross GP championship by six points over defending World Supercross GP champ Ricky Carmichael. More than 100,000 listeners tuned in to the Supercross LIVE! Webcast on www.supercross.cc.com, the official site of Amp'd Mobile Supercross and the only live race call, for Toronto and Vancouver.
In Vancouver, Stewart managed to pass holeshot winner Kyle Lewis on the opening lap and procure a comfortable lead while Carmichael, who won the Vancouver race last season, dug his way out of a mid-pack start.
"The first turn was kind of tricky," said Carmichael afterward. "A ninety-degree turn with a jump, and everybody got all balled up. It's crazy back there -- not a place that I want to be."
Stewart has made a statement by winning the first two races and is the man to beat.
"James (Stewart) has started the season off with two impressive wins," said Denny Stephenson, color commentator for SPEED's broadcast of Amp'd Mobile Supercross. "He now has all of the pressure on him going into Anaheim on January 7. The next few weeks are important to all of the guys who raced in Canada. They need to use what they have learned from these races and more forward. It's a 17-race season."
"We got through these races smart and safe," said Stewart. "I had a great pace and wanted to keep an eye on Ricky. I am learning and we have three weeks until we get to Anaheim. I came here and wanted to win. It was good for me, and I know that my program is working. I know my Dad will be all over me back home to get ready for the rest of the season. I probably watched the tape from Toronto 150 times."
Carmichael, who has 14 AMA National championships, has not thrown in the towel yet. He will head back to his home in Florida and continue his regimented training program.
"I had a simple game plan going into the race and I stuck to it," said Carmichael. "I did what I wanted to do but didn't start where I wanted to start. No excuses, though, I got beat. But I was happy with the way I rode and I put in some good laps. I just tried to learn more about the bike and get ready for Anaheim."
