AURORA, Ill. - In a volatile television marketplace, EA SPORTS Supercross Presented by Speed Stick continues to maintain its stronghold of not only the extreme sports audience but mainstream America as well. The first of three ABC EA SPORTS Supercross television specials that aired from Pontiac, Mich., at the Silverdome Sunday, April 8th, earned a 1.1 rating and 3 share outperforming IRL and CART motor sports programming on the same day. Highlighting this event were spectacular rating in Seattle, Wash. (3.5), Orlando, Fla. (2.0), and Chicago, Ill. (1.4).
The 1.1 rating represents more than 1.2 million homes who witnessed Team Suzuki's 17-year-old Travis Pastrana capture his first 125cc Eastern Regional Supercross championship in a drama-filled season that included a few nasty crashes and nagging injuries. Nonetheless, Pastrana valiantly came through when he needed to in front of 61,728 fans at the Silverdome, Pontiac, Mich. In the 250cc class, Team Chevy Trucks Kawasaki's Ricky Carmichael kept his winning streak alive with his 10th consecutive.
"This is the fourth year of EA SPORTS Supercross on ABC, and I could not be more excited with the success," said Mike Weber, Executive Vice President, Television and Licensing, SFX Motor Sports. "This was the first of three shows on ABC in 2001, and we expect big things in the future for EA SPORTS Supercross. The tremendous growth of supercross in recent years is proof that this sport is moving to the next level."
EA SPORTS Supercross continued to stretch the television boundaries this year by expanding to three events featured on ABC television, maintaining the ESPN2 schedule highlighting the series and embarking on the second-annual live supercross on Pay-Per-View television.
EA SPORTS Supercross will culminate in Las Vegas on May 5th, with round 16, which will be featured live on Pay-Per-View. For more information, contact your local cable provider. The April 21st Texas event will air Sunday April 22nd on ABC at 5:00 p.m. ET/4:00 p.m. PT, and the Salt Lake City April 28th event will air Sunday the 29th also on ABC at 3:00 p.m. ET/2:00 p.m. PT.
