WARD ON TOP OF AMA SUPERMOTO

PICKERINGTON, Ohio (June 6, 2006) -- Jeff Ward moved into the lead in the AMA Supermoto Championship presented by Parts Unlimited after sweeping both legs of last Saturday's series event at Road America's Briggs & Stratton Motorplex in Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. This Saturday, June 10, the series moves upstate to USA International Raceway in Shawano.

Ward, 44, of Newport Beach, Calif., was dominant in his victories and the 2004 AMA Supermoto Champion is beginning to feel better about his chances to win back the title this year.

"We had a lot of mechanical problems in the first round at Fontana," said Ward, who rides for Troy Lee Designs Honda. "Everything came together at Road America and I felt really strong in both races. My training has allowed me to push hard every lap. I think that's where I had my advantage. Hopefully I can keep the momentum going at Shawano."

While Ward was having a dream weekend, first round winner Doug Henry had a weekend he'd rather forget. A mechanical problem with his Graves Yamaha forced him to pit for repairs and the resulting 15th-place finish in race two dropped him from lead in the series. Henry is 15 points behind Ward coming into Shawano. A win is worth 25 points, so with two races and 50 points up for grabs at Shawano, Henry is hoping to regain some ground in the standings. He won both legs of the series last year at Shawano.

Red Bull KTM HMC rider Kurt Nicoll is third in the standings, five points behind Henry. His teammate and defending AMA Supermoto Champion Jurgen Kunzel has a lot of work ahead of him if he is to defend his title. The German is ranked eighth in the series coming into this Saturday's race.

Troy Lee Designs Honda also leads in the Supermoto Lites class. There it's Cassidy Anderson, of Provo, Utah, leading the way having won the first two rounds of the series. Brandon Currie, of Graves Yamaha, and GP Husqvarna rider Alexandre Thiebault are chasing Anderson. They are tied for second place in the point standings, just eight points back.

Wisconsin's own Ben Carlson, of West Bend, holds the series lead in the Supermoto Unlimited class. Carlson, who rides for Team Red Bull KTM HMC, is trying to hold off GP Husqvarna's Gary Trachy who stands second in the series.

The AMA Supermoto Championship presented by Parts Unlimited first visited USA International Raceway last July. The challenging track quickly became a favorite of many series riders.

For ticket information call (414) 234-8230. Tickets are $15 at the gate.
