Can Carmichael Win the Grand Slam This Weekend?
AURORA, Ill. (October 4, 2005) -- Leading up to this weekend's U.S. Open, Team Suzuki's Ricky Carmichael has dominated every major championship in 2005. While the Suzuki rider is considered by some to be the greatest motocross racer of all time, it has been three years since he last won the U.S. Open championship.
After successfully defending his 2000 U.S. Open championship, Carmichael has struggled to put together a win at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. In 2002, he crashed on Friday night, won on Saturday night and finished second overall. That year Honda's Mike LaRocco walked away with his first U.S. Open championship and the $100,000 check.
In 2003, Carmichael picked up his third 250cc AMA Supercross Series championship but lost the U.S. Open championship to Yamaha's Chad Reed. Prior to the U.S. Open, Reed won the last six 250cc supercross races of the season and soon became Carmichael's arch rival.
Despite missing the 2004 supercross season due to a knee injury, Carmichael earned his fifth consecutive AMA 250cc Motocross championship and made his return to indoor racing at the U.S. Open. This was also Carmichael's first race on his new team, factory Suzuki. On Friday night Carmichael raced smart, didn't take any chances and finished second, hoping to raise the bar on Saturday night. He controlled the lead until lap 17 where he crashed and mechanical problems forced him to DNF. Reed moved into the lead and won his second consecutive U.S. Open.
After winning his first THQ World Supercross GP championship in 2005, Carmichael captured his fourth THQ AMA Supercross Series championship, his sixth AMA 250cc Motocross championship and brought home the gold for Team USA at the Motocross des nations in Ernee, France. A win this weekend for Carmichael could be the first racer in history to complete motocross' version of golf's 'grand slam.'
The eighth-annual U.S. Open, which will be broadcast nationally on NBC October 23 at 3:30 EST for the second consecutive season, features the world's top motocross racers competing for the world's largest single race purse. Four-time supercross champion and two-time U.S. Open champion Ricky Carmichael (Suzuki), two-time 125cc regional supercross champion James Stewart (Kawasaki) and former 125 Western Regional AMA Supercross Series champion Kevin Windham (Honda) are confirmed to race.
This year's race will be webcast live on www.ussx.com from the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas October 7&8 starting at 7:30 p.m. PST. In addition to the live race coverage, the pre and post-race press conferences will be webcast live as well.
Tickets for the 2005 U.S. Open are on-sale now and available through www.ticketmaster.com, by calling 702-474-4000, or at the MGM Grand Garden Arena box office.
