Cut short by rain at Lowe's, Howard storms into South Boston for finale
"Disappointing" 8th place run serves as fuel for a season-ending win

Indianapolis, IN (October 13, 2003) -- For the second straight time this year, rain interfered with the ARCA event at Lowe's Motor Speedway. Once again, they had to set the field by points. In fact, the way last Thursday night's race played out was almost identical for Shelby Howard. The only difference this time was Howard had a shot at the win. Only if the race had gone green for the distance.

With Tour de Georgia on his Dodge for a one-race deal, the 18-year-old Howard finished 8th in the rain-shortened EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 150. Advertised at 100 laps, the event was stopped after 66 laps.

Howard started from the 5th spot on the grid, a position awarded based on points. Running as high as 3rd and pitting with the leaders, Howard felt he could've at least been runner-up if the rains had held off.

"We've figured some stuff out here at Lowe's," Howard said about his first top ten finish at the track. "The Tour de Georgia Dodge was tight and we couldn't get it freed up. We adjusted it, but we just couldn't find the sweet spot. We were more confident tonight. I'm getting more comfortable at this track and wish we would've had more green flag racing. I believe I could've gotten there."

Headed to South Boston for the Liberty 200, the season-ending race for ARCA, Howard hopes the weather cooperates this weekend. "We've taking our Salem stuff, so we'll definitely be strong. I believe we've got a legitimate chance at the pole and I'm looking for another win. I really like our chances on Saturday."

Howard has four wins on top of ten top fives and twelve top tens this season. He's only 30 points out of 3rd, so another top five could very well see him climb a spot before the final standings are settled.

The Liberty 200 Presented by Bank of America will be a one-day show, taking the green at 9 pm ET for 200 laps of short track action. The race will be shown on November 1 on The Outdoor Channel at 11 pm ET.
