Beau Slocumb Makes Impressive ARCA RE/MAX Series Debut at Chicagoland Speedway; The 24-Year-Old Drives the No. 32 Wolf Pack Rentals Toyota to a 12th-Place Finish
JOLIET, Ill. (August 31, 2009) -- Beau Slocumb headed to Chicagoland Speedway making a number of firsts: his first ARCA RE/MAX Series race, his first race at a mile-and-a-half track, and his first major race since entering remission from his battle with cancer. Teaming together for this race, Turner Motorsports, LLC and Win-Tron Racing, owned by Steve Turner and Kevin Cywinski respectively, gave the 24-year-old the opportunity to get back in a stock car and shine on a main stage. Driving the No. 32 Wolf Pack Rentals Toyota, Slocumb overcame a spin early in the 100-lap race and a tight-handling car to impress many and finish in the 12th position on the lead lap.
Starting from 13th-place, Slocumb completed one lap before the first caution of the race slowed the field. On lap five, the Georgia native restarted from the 14th position and made contact with a fellow competitor, causing fender damage to his Toyota. After reporting to his Win-Tron Racing crew that his Wolf Pack Rentals entry was tight, Slocumb was in the process of passing when another competitor made contact and sent Slocumb spinning through the infield grass, bringing out the second caution of the evening.
Crew chief Mike Chaffee called Slocumb to pit road for four fresh tires, fuel, and damage repair to both front fenders. As the race restarted on lap 40, Slocumb was in the 15th position. The No. 32 Camry was running in 13th-place when another caution came out on lap 56. Chaffee once again radioed for Slocumb to bring his car to the attention of his pit crew for four tires, fuel, along with track bar and air pressure adjustments.
The field ensued into a green-flag run, allowing Slocumb to gain a couple of positions. When another caution came out on lap 80, Slocumb remained on the race track, putting the young driver in the eighth position on the restart. Within five laps, the other competitors who stopped for fresh tires, had caught and passed Slocumb, pushing him back to 14th-place. As the final caution of the event came out on lap 195, Slocumb returned to pit road for one final time, putting on four fresh tires and making a wedge adjustment to help with the tight-handling condition he had felt throughout most of the race. Slocumb gained two positions during the final lap to come home in the 12th position and finish on the lead lap in his first ARCA RE/MAX Series race.
"I'm very happy to have had this opportunity to drive in this ARCA RE/MAX Series race," said Slocumb. "To not know when I would be able to get back into a stock car a few months ago, to just finishing my first ARCA race is an accomplishment. I have to thank Steve (Turner) and Kevin (Cywinski) for giving me the chance to drive this No. 32 Wolf Pack Rentals Toyota and as much as I would have liked to finish higher, I'm happy with a 12th-place finish. All of these guys did a great job all week and I'm glad that they let me drive their equipment. It was definitely a lot of fun out there and hopefully we will get to do it again real soon."
The ARCA RE/MAX Series will return to racing action at Toledo Speedway on Friday, September 4th.
