Goess Takes Second Menards Pole Award of 2010
(JOLIET, Ill. - August 27, 2010) - Craig Goess became just the second driver this season to win multiple pole awards in the ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards, driving a lap around the 1.5-mile Chicagoland Speedway in 30.380 seconds (177.749 mph) to win the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell. Patrick Sheltra will join Goess on the front row for this evening's Ansell Protective Gloves 150.
Goess (No. 81 Greenville Toyota of N.C. Toyota) started on the pole at Michigan International Speedway in June before finishing in sixth place. Goess had led an open test at Chicagoland last week and the series' opening practice yesterday, and posted the third-fastest best lap in final practice this morning.
Sheltra (No. 60 Ferguson Pipe/Recycling Services Toyota), who took the track just three slots before Goess, made a bid for the pole by completing his only lap in 30.840 seconds (177.165 mph). Goess was not to be outdone, and just minutes later drove the lap that gave him his fifth top-five qualifying effort of the season.
"The pole's the best place to start," said Goess. "We're out in clean air, and hopefully we can make some good calls and I can do my job and come out of here like this again at the end of the race."
Goess earned 15 bonus points for winning the Menards Pole Award, and by doing so, took the series standings lead by five points over Frank Kimmel, who qualified 12th, and 10 points over Tom Hessert, who qualified 13th.
"Every point's important at this point," he said. "Everybody's strong at different places. Whatever we can get when we get it is what we're trying to do. I went out there with that in mind, to try to do the best I possibly could to get the pole. Luckily, it worked out for us."
Sheltra's position gave him 10 bonus points in the series standings and helped him close his deficit to the lead from 40 points to 35.
"This isn't about me, it's about this Sheltra Motorsports team," said Sheltra. "I'm just the lucky guy that is able to drive it. I'm super proud of their hard work. We were a little worried that because we didn't test, we might have been behind the ball a little bit. We unloaded strong and only have gotten stronger these last two days. We have a super car and I'm really looking forward to the race later today."
Casey Roderick (No. 51 Phoenix Racing Chevrolet) qualified third at 30.501 seconds (177.043 mph) after driving the best lap in the final practice session earlier in the morning. Mikey Kile (No. 25 Texas Corral Toyota) and Justin Marks (No. 32 Construct Corps Dodge) rounded out the top five.
Steve Arpin, Chad McCumbee, Grant Enfinger, Tim George Jr., and Joey Coulter comprised the remainder of the top ten.
With his pole, Goess joined Chris Buescher (Toledo and Mansfield) atop the standings in the year-long Menards Pole Award competition. 10 drivers are tied for third place with one apiece: James Buescher (Daytona), Roderick (Palm Beach), Max Gresham (Salem), Dakoda Armstrong (Talladega), Kile (Pocono - June), Ty Dillon (Iowa), Kimmel (Pocono - July), Brian Campbell (Berlin), Marks (New Jersey), and Arpin (Springfield).
The 100-lap, 150-mile Ansell Protective Gloves 150 will air live on SPEED at 6 p.m. Central. Live timing and scoring and live audio coverage will be presented by ARCA Nation and the ARCA Racing Network at ARCARacing.com.
