Joey Coulter is Daytona Ready
Huntersville, N.C., February 4, 2009 - Joey Coulter and the Tempest Cycles/Darrell Gwynn Foundation Chevy No. 16 team are ready to tackle the high banks of Daytona International Speedway as a teammate to five-time Daytona champion Bobby Gerhart in the ARCA Lucas Oil Slick Mist 200 on Feb. 7.
I learned a lot from Bobby Gerhart, said Coulter after the team completed testing at Daytona and Talladega. There's nobody better to learn from at Daytona, and hopefully at the end of the race we'll be pushing each other across the line in first and second. I can't thank him enough for his help. It's all about learning from his experience; I've always liked going to the experienced veterans because they can share information that can speed up the learning process.
The 18-year-old Florida native's first competition on the superspeedway as a teammate to Gerhart also marks the beginning of his 2009 season's full-time ARCA campaign with his own equipment. Onboard is veteran crew chief Harold Holly, who brings a wealth of knowledge and experience with more than 30 victories in the Nationwide Series.
It's exciting to have a crew chief with Harold's experience on the team, Coulter said. He has so much experience and knowledge that I feel confident getting into the racecar knowing I have him on top of the pit box.
Whereas Gerhart has been instrumental in teaching Coulter the nuances of superspeedway driving, Coulter said, the learning process also involves communication between Coulter and his new crew chief. Coulter described his budding relationship with Holly as awesome.
Harold and I meshed really well, Coulter said. We worked on car setup and communicating with each other. I can learn a lot from him. There's not a lot I can do other than hold it wide open and drive (at the superspeedways), but we had some good test sessions. He knows what to do to the car.
With nine cars in the team's arsenal, Coulter feels that with Harold Holly's help he's ready for a full-time season of ARCA competition. But Holly did point out that ARCA rules don't allow a single driver to win both the top rookie title and the championship in the same year.
We'd like to win the Rookie of the Year, Coulter said, but we'd also like to win the championship. If we have to choose, I think we'll take the championship.
