FLAT ROCK, MI: A total of 127 race teams trekked to Flat Rock Speedway Saturday for the Jasper Engines and Transmissions Classic. Layne Parker of Jasper greeted the winners in victory lane festivities as the race closed the 48th season of operation at the ¼ mile oval. Chad Guinn, Billy Simmons, Jeff Maran, Steve Cronenwett Jr., Andy Taylor, Kent Baledge and Chris Bires were the main event winners.

The ARCA Lincoln Welders Truck Series completed their year with a 50 lap feature event, which was rescheduled from a July rain-out. Fast qualifier Bill Withers (12:723) jumped out front at the green, but Brett Oakley quickly worked his way to the front. Oakley set sail away from the pack, but with a tire going down, Withers and Chad Guinn reeled in the leader. Oakley slowed, forcing Withers to also slow to avoid contact, while Guinn zipped under the duo going down the back chute to take the lead. Guinn, who began his racing career at Flat Rock, held on for the popular win over Withers, Pete Wormcastle, Robbin Slaughter, Mark Otting, Paul Hahn, Jack Weethee, Jeff Speakman, Eddy Adams and John Witham. Slaughter's finish enabled the Columbus, OH driver to clinch the series title for 2001.

31 Michigan Legends Cars turned out for the finale, and Billy Simmons sped to the win in the 25 lap main event. Simmons got by Levi Rouster just past the half-way point and grabbed the win over John Turnbull Jr. Turnbull reeled in Simmons with 5 to go, but settled for second, which gave him the Series championship. Third went to A.J. Kramer, followed by Levi Rouster, Tom Adis, James Rader, Steve Jancar, Wally Kosicki, Shawn Jennison and Dennis Knox. Simmons is the son of former Flat Rock Figure 8 king Dick "Little Richard" Simmons. Heat wins went to Turnbull, Mike Lowe, Jeff Mansfield and Rick Kilbourn. Justin Regnerus took the semi.

The ARCA Factory Stock division, which competes at sister track Toledo on a weekly basis, paid their annual visit to "The Rock", with 31 cars turning out. Toledo's Jeff Maran held back the charge of Toledo champ Paul Duffin to grab the win in the 20 lap A Main. Craig Osenbuagh, Paul Radavich, James Hazlett, Pete Shrake, Tara St. Aubin, Joe Gramlich, Lyn Hall and Billy Gotts were next in line. Radavich set quick time at 15:234. The 12 lap B Main went to Steve Cronenwett Jr., who came from the rear of the 11 car field to take his first-ever checkered flag in a popular victory. Ken Smith, H.J. Helzer, Randy Roberts and Jill Ausmus followed.

The MCR Dwarf Cars brought 24 cars to Flat Rock, and "The Sheriff" Andy Taylor, was up to the task. Taylor set quick time at 12:668, and notched the 20 lap feature win. Taylor worked his way to the front, using both the high and low grooves to take the point from early leader Jon Wylie as he sailed to the victory over Wylie, Craig Curtis, Rob Roney, Mike McManman Sr., Mike McManman Jr., Eric Hoffman, Tom Silwa, Craig Meyers and Chris Hill. Wylie, Oscar O'Dell and Mike Strand won the heat races.

The Baby Grand Stock Cars made their first-ever visit to Flat Rock, with Kent Baledge taking top honors in the 25 lap main event over Don Sterck, Mike Bymaster, Dan Napier, Steve Verbeke, Johnathan Byrd II, Steve Bradley, Matt Goodnight, Jim Dugan and Mark Maynard. Sterck set quick time at 13:103.

And the Allison Legacy Cars also traveled to Flat Rock for their initial appearance, with Chris Bires declared the winner of the 25 lap main event. Bires was spun in turn 4 on the final lap, but Legacy officials awarded the win to Chris over Kelly Bires, Justin Switzer, Dan Shewmake, Bill Hobson, Chad Davidson, Tony Sommer, Justin Claucherty, Keith Tolf and Sarah Schaub. Neil McClelland set fast time at 13:520.
