McGilton Turns To Iowa To Set '07 Season Back On Track
"Brewco Driver Looks For Stout Finish Under The Lights"
NEWTON, Iowa (May 29, 2007) - - ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Phillip McGilton's last few ARCA races have felt more like a rollercoaster ride gone bad. However, the Brewco Motorsports development driver turns to the recently built Iowa Speedway for some luck in the West and put his first full season of ARCA competition back on track.
McGilton steers into Saturday's event enjoying a much needed weekend off reflecting on a good race turned ugly when a series of misfortunes took the No. 47 team from the hunt at Toledo Speedway two weeks ago. Now, the rookie is ready to climb behind the wheel of his racecar and make a statement again.
"We've had good racecars all year, just haven't had the lucky we needed recently," said McGilton. "We're trying to put ourselves into the point's battle, but the bad breaks have put us a little behind. We're playing catch up once again this weekend. On the bright side, I have a good feeling about Saturday's race."
Unlike his Kentucky-based team, McGilton has recorded laps around Iowa Speedway. Last season, the Marion, Illinois native planted himself into the record books by becoming one of 41 competitors to take the inaugural green flag in series debut at the Newton, Iowa track.
Those smiling moments were later overshadowed after McGilton; driving the No. 42 SIPerformance Ford exited the event after 28 laps with engine failure. Knowing the engine package his team is bringing this weekend, McGilton isn't concern about a mechanical failure; instead he's focusing on capturing his first top-five finish of his career.
"Iowa is a great place to race. A true state of the art facility. The track has the same characteristics as Richmond International Raceway. We have some good notes from last year and we'll utilize those throughout practice and qualifying on Saturday," commented McGilton.
"A good top-five run is what this team needs right now. We've been strong everywhere we've gone. New track, old track, it doesn't make a difference, we've been solid. We just need to keep the fenders on the car and finish the race; the finish we're looking for should come to us," sounded McGilton.
Currently tied for seventh in the ARS championship standings, McGilton easily controls the ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie-of-the-Year standings over second place competitor Michael McDowell. He has led that department since the season opener at Daytona International Speedway when he finished a then career-best ninth.
"It's nice to be leading the Rookie-of-the-Year standings. That was our big picture overall heading into the season. But, we still have a long way to go this season and our team has the capabilities of winning the championship. I'm confident that everything will fall into place with some consistency and good finishes."
