Ty Dillon Surges to Pole for Prairie Meadows 200

(NEWTON, Iowa - July 10, 2010) - Ty Dillon proved to be a chip off the old block at Iowa Speedway this afternoon, driving a lap around the 0.875-mile oval in 23.736 seconds (132.710 mph) to claim the Menards Pole Award presented by Ansell for the Prairie Meadows 200. Dillon, the 18-year-old grandson of legendary NASCAR team owner Richard Childress, is the second driver this season to earn the pole in advance of his ARCA Racing Series presented by RE/MAX and Menards debut.

Dillon, who finished second at the track in a NASCAR K&N Pro Series East and West combination race in May, edged second and third qualifiers Tom Hessert and Justin Marks, respectively. His No. 41 Karl Chevrolet/Richard Childress Racing Development Chevrolet steadily improved throughout the day, finishing with the 16th-best fast lap in the morning practice session and the 13th in the afternoon before his pole effort.

"We had a great car. We had to switch our springs over a little bit. We threw a big curve ball at the end, and the guys worked really hard," Dillon said. "We're going to plan on rolling up front and staying up there."

Joey Coulter and Max Gresham - this year's other driver to win the pole before his first career start, at Salem in April - comprised the remainder of the top five. Craig Goess, the winner at Pocono two races ago, qualified sixth. Grant Enfinger will start seventh after the best qualifying effort of his career, and points leader Patrick Sheltra will start eighth. Mikey Kile, the winner in the tour's last race at Michigan, will start ninth, and Dakoda Armstrong will roll off tenth.

Frank Kimmel will start 16th for the 400th start of his ARCA Racing Series career. Kimmel's first start in the series came at Toledo Speedway on July 1, 1990, 20 years and nine days ago.

Dillon was especially pleased to win the pole after his brother, Austin, charted second in each NASCAR Camping World Truck Series practice earlier in the day. The elder Dillon, 20, finished second at Iowa in a Childress ARCA development car one year ago.

"(Austin) was putting a hard time on me after practice, so now I'll have to put it on him," said Ty Dillon.

The pole was the third of the weekend for Earnhardt-Childress Racing Engines, a fact the young driver was sure to note in front of the Menards Pole Award signage in Victory Lane.

"Maybe ECR can sweep every pole this weekend," he said. "That'd be a great deal for the whole ECR engine shop. The guys got the pole with Jamie McMurray (in Sprint Cup action at Chicagoland) and Kevin Harvick in the Nationwide Series."

Dillon mentioned that competing at the central Iowa track in May made him more comfortable and gave him some important knowledge.

"I just learned how close the racing is, and that's what's helped me so far in changing from those cars to ARCA cars. I learned this track so well during that race," Dillon said.

The Prairie Meadows 200 takes the green flag at 9 p.m. Eastern, with live television coverage provided by SPEED. Live timing and scoring and live audio will be presented by ARCA Nation at ARCARacing.com.
