71 Year Old NASCAR Legend James Hylton set to race in Kansas

INMAN, SC (June 28, 2006) - 71 one year old racing legend James Hylton will be at Kansas this weekend attempting to qualify for the Kansas Lottery $ 200 Grand ARCA RE/MAX series race. The 2006 season is Hylton's last season as an active driver and closes a career that dates back to the formative years of NASCAR.

James Hylton began his driving career in 1964 driving Ned Jarrett's backup car. In 1966, Hylton had 20 top five finishes in 41 races and was named NASCAR's Grand National Rookie of the Year.

To this date, James remains the highest finishing rookie in NASCAR Nextel cup history. Hylton finished second in the points standing to champion David Pearson and also finished second in 1967 with 26 top five finishes. In 1969, Hylton became the first independent driver to win over $100,000 on the Grand National circuit. On March 1, 1970, Hylton drove his 1969 Ford Torino to his first win at the .542 mile Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway.

In 1971, Hylton again finished second in the season standings to winner Richard Petty. On August 6, 1972, Hylton led 106 laps in his 1971 Ford on route to winning the Talladega 500. 1975 saw Hylton finish third in the point's race while driving his Chevrolet Laguna racecars. 1981 was his last year as a full time driver on the Winston Cup Circuit.J

Hylton has competed in 42career ARCA races with his top finish being sixth at Daytona in 1975.

James most recent ARCA RE/MAX series start was as the Pocono 200, where he recorded a 21st place finish.

James Hylton returned to NASCAR for the first time since 1993 at the AT&T 250 this weekend at the Milwaukee Mile. The appearance also was Hylton's first Busch Series race since 1982's Coca Cola 200 at Rockingham Speedway. James drove a Chevrolet Monte Carlo owned by Jay Robinson Racing at the historic mile oval.

Even though James finished 41st, he still was thrilled at the opportunity provided by Jay Robinson and his crew. The FX broadcast crew was especially found of James and remarked that he was in amazing shape to be able to handle a race car at age 71.

James Hylton has raced in both USAC and ARCA competition at the speedway but this was his first NASCAR sanctioned event. Hylton stated "everyone from NASCAR was great this weekend, a few even told me to not to wait 25 years for my next appearance". This also marked a reunion with Hylton's former NASCAR Craftsman Truck Driver, Derricke Cope. Cope, the 1990 Daytona 500 winner, drove the number 49 Advil Ford Fusion in the race. However, brake problems forced Cope to drop out on lap 204, resulting in a 34th place finish for the veteran driver.
