RUNNER-UP FINISH FOR CLEMENTS AT POCONO; LOOKS FORWARD TO GATEWAY DEBUT
SPARTANBURG, SC (July 25, 2006) -- Jeremy Clements improved his career best to date finish from a string of third place showings (including the recent "WLWT Channel 5-150" at Kentucky Speedway) with a strong runner-up finish to seven-time ARCA RE/MAX Series Champion Frank Kimmel at last weekend's "Pennsylvania 200".
Clements had an impressive top-5 performance in his first trek to the 2.5-mi triangular track during the spring event but a blown engine in the closing laps forced the team out of the race early. The #3 Hamrick's of Gaffney/Georgia Boot/Harrison's Workwear Chevy team returned determined to improve on their performance. After qualifying sixth out of forty-one entries, the twenty-one year-old throttlestomper consistently ran in the top-10 all day and even paced the field for four laps.
Kimmel held the lead and collected his 67th win in the series and was trailed by Clements, Chad McCumbee, Dexter Bean and Chase Miller.
"We had a good car and the guys did a good job getting me off pit road," recalled Clements. "I gave it everything to win but Kimmel's stuff was good and we were just a bit short. A second place is good for a team like ours, hopefully it will make a few people notice we've consistently been in the top-5. We just need to keep working hard and focus on the next race."
The next race for the Palmetto State native and his family-owned team will be Gateway International Raceway when Clements makes his debut at the unique 1.25-mile speedway.
"I've wanted to race at Gateway but never had the chance because of geography or scheduling," commented Clements. "Marc Mitchell went last year with our Busch team but I was still not ready to race because of my hand [Clements sustained a serious injury to his right hand in July 2004 when a driveshaft pierced the cockpit of his dirt late model and tore through his hand]. But I'm ready to go. The track has two completely different sets of corners and I've heard how it drives like no other surface on the tour. They are expecting over 50 entries so it will be tough since I've never seen the place."
"I'd like to improve on my finish from Pocono last weekend," added the jokester. "That would be great! But we just hope to go there, learn some information in practice to benefit us, qualify for the show and complete all the laps. The rest comes down to luck."
The ARCA RE/MAX Series will return to action on Friday, July 28, 2006, for the "Shop 'n Save 150" at Gateway International Raceway. The 1.5-mile speedway is located in the shadow of the Jefferson Expansion Memorial/Gateway Arch of St. Louis in nearby Madison, IL. Pork Pole Qualifying is scheduled to kick off at 4 p.m. CDT and the green flag will drop at 8 p.m. CDT.
