Joey Miller Goes From Possible DNF to Top-Five Finish at Kansas
20-year-old overcomes bad vibration to finish well

LAKEVILLE, MN (July 6, 2005) -- The mark of a great race team is when a bad day can be turned into a respectable finish. This past weekend, Joey Miller and the #9 Hagans Racing/Country Joe Homes team proved that by finishing fifth in the ARCA race at Kansas Speedway after having a problem that could have turned their day into a DNF.

"It was definitely a learning weekend," said 20-year-old Miller. "We had some ups and downs. We started on the pole and had a really good car all day. Halfway through the race, we were leading when we had a really bad vibration.

"We weren't quite sure what it was. We came in because we had seen some tire problems so we wanted to make sure that we didn't have a tire going down that would take us out of contention for the win. We came into the pits and when we went back out, the vibration was still there. The guys weren't sure what was going on. We had the option of staying out there or bringing it in behind the wall to see what was wrong. I really didn't want to do that. I just tightened up the seat belts and hoped that nothing would break."

The gamble paid off, not only with a finish but a pretty good one at that.

"Nothing broke and we ended up with a fifth-place finish."

If it hadn't been for the problem, the day could have been much greater.

"We had a really good car and should have won it, but the situation didn't work out in the right way for that to happen."

The top five made for a neutral points day as well. ARCA point leader Frank Kimmel did not gain any ground on Miller.

"It was another top-five finish and we didn't loose any points to Kimmel. We stayed the same."

The next race for Miller will be Friday night's race at Kentucky Speedway. That is one event which Miller is looking forward to after finishing third at Kentucky earlier this season.

"I'm really excited about going to Kentucky," said Miller. "We tested there a few weeks ago and I think I've got a better car for there than the one I had at Kansas. The car was awesome in the test. We'll go there with the same car we ran last weekend."

Miller's mount for the Kentucky event will be one that has served him very well so far in 2005.

"That car that I've been racing at Nashville, Kentucky and Kansas is the same car we will be using. The worst thing that we've had to do to that car this year has been to put a new left-front fender on. We've been really fortunate this year with that."

The ARCA RE/MAX Series will race at Kentucky Speedway this Friday, July 8th. The race will start at 8:30pm and will be televised live on SPEED Channel.
