SURPRISE! Leonard Fastest In Kansas Practice
Kansas City, Kansas - - 2005 ARCA RE/MAX Series Rookie-of-the-Year candidate Johnny Leonard stormed to the front of the speed charts Friday morning at Kansas Speedway leading a group of 26 ARCA competitors in preparation for tomorrow's Kansas Lottery $200 Grand.
Leonard, driving the No. 13 Boca Bay Builders Chevrolet Monte Carlo maneuvered his machine around the 1.5 mile-track in 32.673 seconds amounting to a speed of 165.274 MPH. Leonard led a host of the hottest drivers on the tour including Chad Blount (2nd), Frank Kimmel (4th), Joey Miller (6th) and Ken Weaver (8th).
"We're all very happy and excited about the results this morning," said Leonard, a native of Cape Coral Florida. "We are running the same car we had at Pocono (purchased from Braun Racing in association with Dale Earnhardt, Inc.) It was a rocket and we had marched as high as forth before the motor blew. Ted (Kennedy, crew chief) has a great setup on the car, pme (Pro Motor Engineering) has supplied a great motor, the crew has done an incredible job and I'm very comfortable with the track."
Friday's first round practice session marked the debut of Leonard's presence at Kansas Speedway and obviously he immediately took well to the track. "Kansas is a very nice facility. The track is a lot like Kentucky. We've run well at Kentucky, I think if everything continues to go our way, we're going to have a great weekend and will be a threat for the win Saturday's afternoon."
Car owner Rick Woodard echoed his driver's statements. "I am very proud of this team. We have come a long way since the start of the season and it's nice to show with the new equipment we've obtained that Johnny and the team are able to show their full potential. We're hoping for more good things to come not only this weekend but for the remainder of the season."
The Kansas Lottery $200 Grand is the ninth of 23 events on the 2005 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. Two rounds of practice are scheduled for the morning on July 1st. Qualifying is also on tap for Friday afternoon with the race set to take the green flag Saturday, July 2nd, 2005. While the race will not be televised on the latest news and results can be found on the official ARCA RE/MAX Series website at www.arcaracing.com
