No. 40. Marc Mitchell, Ergon Chevrolet

OVERVIEW

Marc Mitchell admitted that Friday was one of the strangest days he has ever been a part of at a racetrack. His finishing spot was also out-of-the-ordinary for the Tallahassee, Florida native. Mitchell can usually be found up front, but he brought his No. 93 Ergon Chevrolet home in the 40th position in the Kansas Lottery $150 Grand event for the ARCA RE/MAX Series.

The ever-changing weather of the Midwest wreaked havoc on the racing surface. For the early morning practice session, the ambient conditions were cool and windy. During practice, Mitchell laid down the 13th fastest lap. By the time he qualified, the air temperature had gone up mightily, causing and already loose racecar to have even less grip. Mitchell brushed the wall on his second qualifying lap, forcing the team to make quick repairs to the Chevrolet. Rain came next and with it a red flag condition. However in order to ensure the car was ready for the race, the Ergon crew continued working under the red flag, forcing them to start the delayed race from the back of the field.

As typical of many races that start after a heavy rain, the first 15 laps were run under caution. However it was during these caution laps that Mitchell began to have motor problems. On lap 17 he pulled behind pit wall where it was discovered that a rocker arm had broken in the motor, ending a long and trying day for the 23-year-old.

"Whew, what a day," exclaimed Mitchell. "We were up toward the top of the board throughout practice, but were never able to make a real qualifying run due to heavy traffic on the race track. Most teams were able to make one and that kind of knocked us down the board a little. But we made a lot of changes and thought we had a good racecar. Then the weather kept changing and really threw us, and several other good cars, a curveball."

"As for the motor, I don't know what happened," continued Mitchell. "Tony Clements builds a great motor that can stand up to a lot of abuse. It was probably just a faulty rocker arm. You get those sometimes, but it is hard to take."

"We have had a good season up to this point so there is no reason to think we won't bounce back from this. The stuff that happened today was definitely not because of lack of work or preparation. We'll be ready for Iowa."

The next race for the Ergon Racing team will be the ARCA RE/MAX Series event at the Iowa Speedway on June 2nd.
