Howard continues to heat up

Lenexa, KS (May 28, 2003) -- Last year at Kansas, Shelby Howard overcame scorching 95-degree heat and no KoolBox in his car by finishing 7th in his first outing at that track. Battling extremities like those was very draining, both physically and mentally, but the cool-headed Howard never wavered, driving smart and steady the whole way.

This year, the air temperature isn't supposed to be nearly as high, but the action will be even hotter. At least if Howard has anything to do with it.

"I'm excited about being back at Kansas," said Howard. "The whole facility is top-notch and the track is very smooth and very fast. There's going to be some good, hard racing on Sunday. There's a lot of experience in the field, but we can hold our own. The Mack Trucks-Beck Dodge should be right there with them."

There will be the usual suspects -- Kimmel, Jarrett, Gibson, and Venturini -- to deal with, plus cagey veterans and late model standouts to fend off. The seventeen-year-old Howard doesn't see a problem, though. He has the right package and the right method. Sunday afternoon will be the time to deliver.

"Our Dodge is fast, the pit crew is fast, and the juice under the hood is strong, so we know we can put up a solid challenge. If we keep everything headed in the right direction, we'll be in good shape."

After winning his first ARCA RE/MAX race a month ago, the Greenwood, Indiana youngster has been on somewhat of a roll. His win was followed by a third and a fourth, a minor speed bump with a thirteenth, then a quick recovery with a sixth place finish last weekend. In 8 starts this year, Howard has four top fives and five top tens. That's a strong showing at any age, but rather compelling coming from a teenager in only his second full year in the series.

The BPU 200 from Kansas Speedway is Sunday, June 1 at 3:00 p.m. EDT. The race will be broadcast on the Outdoor Channel on Sunday, June 8 at 4 p.m.
