Ken Weaver Wants to Finish What He Started at Kansas Speedway
After Qualifying Crash Last Year, the Texas Veteran Headed to Kansas with High Hopes
DENVER, NC (June 25, 2006) -- All Ken Weaver wants to do on July 1st is finish what he started last year at Kansas Speedway. Weaver had the car to beat in qualifying in the 2005 edition of the Kansas Lottery $200 Grand ARCA RE/MAX Series event, but the car was almost too good. Weaver found himself in a qualifying crash last year and was never able to get the backup car as good as the primary in the race. So when the Texas native goes back to Kansas Speedway on July 1st, he'll be looking to get back what the 1.5-mile speedway took away from him last season.
"Man I can't wait to get back to Kansas this time around," said Weaver. "I kind of feel like that place owes me one, or maybe I owe it one, after I wrecked in qualifying last year. I was on a pole run and was pushing it a little too far and going into turn one and I put it into the wall.
"But Kansas is still one of my favorite racetracks. I've run five NASCAR Craftsman Truck races there, and I really love that place. Kansas is a really greasy track especially when it's hot, but that kind of track really suits my driving style. That's why I'm looking forward to going there."
For Weaver, the Kansas race is not just an opportunity to bounce back from some tough luck last year, but it's also a chance to keep up the momentum gained on the 2006 season for the team of his 1-800-4-A-PHONE Dodge for Eddie Sharp Racing. Weaver has scored three straight top-10 finishes to keep him in the hunt of the 2006 ARCA RE/MAX Series championship. Sitting in a fourth-place tie in points means that Weaver has to leave Kansas with a solid run to keep up his title dreams.
"I think it's going to be very important to have a good run at Kansas. Obviously, we always go to the track looking to win and it's still too early to point-race, but we need to keep finishing strong if we want to have a chance. The guys give me great racecars, and hopefully we'll have a winning effort at Kansas to keep up this momentum."
The Kansas Lottery $200 Grand is scheduled to take the green flag at 4:45pm at Kansas Speedway on Saturday, July 1st. The race will be aired on a next-day tape-delay telecast on SPEED Sunday, July 3rd, at 3:00pm.
