MATT HUTTER TAKES THE POLE FOR FIRSTPLUS FINANCIAL 200

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. -- Matt Hutter, one of the last drivers to make a qualifying attempt today at Daytona International Speedway for the FirstPlus Financial 200, proved that good things come to those who wait.

Hutter, driving a Chevrolet, took the pole position for Sunday's ARCA Bondo/Mar-Hyde series event with a speed of 188.869 mph, edging Bobby Gerhart, who looked to be in position to take the pole for the seasoning opening race. "Generally, the later you qualify the faster you will go," said Hutter, who was the 64th out of 65 drivers who attempted qualifying runs. "We had a pretty good run in practice, but we figured we could pick it up some. There's no better place to start at Daytona."

Gerhart, turning in a speed of 188.178 mph, was close behind, followed by Bob Schacht (188.013 mph), Mark Gibson (187.762 mph), and Shawna Robinson (187.118 mph). Robinson, who hasn't driven competitively since a 1995 NASCAR Busch Series race in Atlanta, was considered a favorite, having turned in the second fastest lap in practice on Wednesday in the James Finch-owned Chevrolet. "I don't know what happened," said Robinson, who hopes to give Finch his fourth ARCA win at Daytona. "I felt like I had everything right, but you never know. The race is what's important."

Rounding out the top ten qualifiers were Josh Baltes, Andy Hillenburg, Shane Yoder, Glen Morgan, and Dan Pardus, a native of Daytona Beach.

Defending ARCA series champion Frank Kimmel spun during his qualifying lap, hitting the wall in turn four. He was conscious and stable and was transported to Halifax Medical Center for examination. Today's qualifying round was for positions 1 through 25. Qualifying for positions 26 through 40 will be held Saturday at 11 a.m. and will be covered live on ESPN.
