Mayfield, Kranefuss to field ARCA team

MOORESVILLE, N.C. (March 8, 1999) Jeremy Mayfield, one of stock car racing's hottest young drivers, will try racing from a different side this week - as a car owner. Mayfield and Mobil 1 Taurus co-owner Michael Kranefuss will field the Kmart Kids Racing Against Drugs Ford in Atlanta (Ga.) Motor Speedway's ARCA race this week, the first of eight planned ARCA races for the team. David Keith, Mayfield's 25-year-old brother-in-law and a veteran of the weekly short tracks, will drive the car for Mayfield-Kranefuss Racing. "We're really excited," said Mayfield. "This is something we've been working on for several months now, and David and the guys in the shop have been doing everything they could to get ready for this. "We're looking at this as the beginning of some pretty neat things. With Kmart and the Kids Racing Against Drugs program on board, this is going to be a top-notch organization. We can do a lot of things." Kmart will be promoting their Kmart Kids Racing Against Drugs events with the team. The Kmart Kids Racing Against Drugs program was designed to educate children and parents of the dangers associated with drug use. Kmart hosts racing events at over 650 Kmart stores in more than 90 cities nationwide. At the events, children ages 7-12 race against the clock in miniature race cars around a specially designed track in the Kmart store parking lot. The program reached over 350,000 children last year, a number sure to increase with the addition of Mayfield- Kranefuss Racing to the Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs program. "This program does a lot of really good things," said Mayfield. "Education against drug abuse is something everyone believes in, and we're happy we can help the Kmart Kids Racing Against Drugs program carry that message. With the numbers of children following sports these days, positive role models are pretty important too. We think David will fit in very well with that too." Keith has raced late model stock cars for Mayfield the past two seasons. He began his career racing go-karts at the age of nine, and since then has amassed six racing championships. He moved to North Carolina from his Owensboro, Ky., home in 1995. The ARCA series should be another big step in his career; Mayfield's own career took off after his 1993 ARCA Rookie of the Year season. "There are some really big names in racing from Owensboro, so I'm really hoping it's something in the water there," Keith said. "Jeremy, Darrell Waltrip, Michael Waltrip, the Green brothers. . . there is a lot to live up to. I just want to work hard, learn all I can at the shop and get as much track time as I can." The Kmart Kids Racing Against Drugs Taurus was one of the fastest in ARCA testing at Atlanta a few weeks ago. "The guys had a really good test down there, so that's really raised the excitement level for everybody," Mayfield said. "David is like a kid at Christmas now. He doesn't know it but we can see him eyeing the calendar in the shop every day, counting the days until we load the car up for Atlanta." A second team will also be racing out of the Mayfield-Kranefuss Racing shop. Philip Kranefuss, younger son of Michael, will be driving the Kmart Kids Race Against Drugs Taurus in the NASCAR Winston Racing Series Late Model Stock Car division. Kranefuss will compete in his second late model season at weekly short tracks across North Carolina. Mayfield drives the Mobil 1 Taurus in NASCAR Winston Cup racing, the car in which he finished seventh in the final national standings last season and won his first national championship race. Kranefuss is a principal in Penske-Kranefuss Racing, which owns Mayfield's team.
