Kimmel Wins at Michigan

BROOKLYN MI (6-17-05) -- With a healthy mix of Cup flavor and a rock-solid lineup of series regulars, six-time ARCA RE/MAX Series champion Frank Kimmel, in the end, led the most laps and had nary a challenger Friday at Michigan Int'l Speedway.

Kimmel, in Larry Clement's Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford, passed Ken Weaver with 13 laps remaining and drove away from the competition to win the Hantz Group 200.

It was Kimmel's 17th career superspeedway victory and 59th overall in his 289th RE/MAX Series start.

"The Advance Auto Parts-Pork Ford was really good all week," said Kimmel. "The guys gave us great pit stops. The car just worked so well. Sometimes I feel like the luckiest guy on earth, racing for a living with a bunch like this."

Chad Blount, in the Foretravel Motorhomes Chevrolet, passed Weaver for second but not in time to mount a charge on Kimmel.

"It was a good, solid day for us," said Blount. "The Foretravel Motorhomes Chevy was really good. Maybe not as good as Frank's, but it was solid. We'll take second and win the next one."

Weaver, in his own 1-800-4-A-Phone Pontiac, finished a career-best third after leading 19 laps. AJ Henriksen, who started 17th, drove his Engineered Components Ford to the finish in fourth. Pork polesitter Kyle Krisiloff, in a Hendrick Motorsports car, finished fifth in the Ditech.com Chevrolet after leading 23 laps.

In the end, 17 drivers finished on the lead lap after 14 lead changes and six cautions for 32 laps offered plenty of excitement throughout the 100-lap, 200-mile race.

Kimmel led the most laps with 27 bringing his all-time superspeedway lap-leader mark to 2,429 superspeedway laps led in 67 races. Rookies' Krisiloff and Joey Miller led 23 laps each; but Miller's day ended on lap 69 when the engine expired in his Country Joe Homes Dodge. Other lap leaders included Henriksen, who led five, and rookie Kevin Hamlin, who led three.

Danny O'Quinn, on the Roush Racing developmental program, finished a career-best sixth in his second series start.

Open-wheel veteran Erin Crocker, in an Evernham Motorsports Dodge, finished a solid seventh, a career-best for the Wilbraham, Massachusetts driver in her second series start.

Hamlin, in the Ken Schrader Racing Dodge, finished eighth in his second series start ahead of Chad McCumbee, who steered Andy Hillenburg's Fast Track Driving School Chevy to a ninth place finishing position.

Walt Brannen raced from the tail-end to finish 10th in Brack Maggard's unsponsored Dodge.

Kimmel earned the ReadyHosting.com Lap Leader award while Weaver picked up the Weld Wheels Halfway Leader honors. Kimmel's brother and crew chief Bill Kimmel won the SK Hand Tool Crew Chief of the Race award. Jupiter, Florida rookie Dominic Vara earned the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger award for his 12th place finish after starting 34th. Tim Turner and the #79 K&K Racing team, who tow to every RE/MAX Series race from Arkansas on a shoe-string budget, earned the Gladiator of the Race award for their perseverance.

The ARCA RE/MAX Series next visits Kansas Speedway for the fifth annual Kansas Lottery $200 Grand on July 2.
