Sherman Shows the Way at MIS; Earns Career-1st Victory

BROOKLYN MI (8-18-06)--ARCA RE/MAX Series veteran Brent Sherman, in the Serta Mattress-Adobe Ford, survived an action-packed Hantz Group 200 at Michigan Int'l Speedway Friday afternoon, earning his career-first victory.

The Barrington, Illinois driver also survived a few gremlins of his own.

"We have had some unfortunate problems the last few weeks and had a spark plug come loose today," said Sherman, who made two unscheduled pit stops to correct the problem.

"I just put my head down and drove hard because I did not have much for the two guys in front of me. They got into each other and I was able to get around them. I'm really proud of my guys, they did a great job of getting us to where we need to be."

The race was lengthened by five laps to accommodate a green flag finish after Frank Kimmel and TJ Bell, racing for the lead, tangled together in turn four on what was supposed to be the final lap of the 100-lap, 200-mile race.

After the pair made contact, Kimmel drove his mangled Pork the Other White Meat Ford down pit road while Bell opted to stay out on the track in the Eddie Sharp Racing Dodge. Kimmel, unable to fix the car, was relegated to the 27th finishing position while Bell, who restarted second, quickly fell off the pace in his damaged machine, finishing 17th.

With five laps to go, NASCAR Busch Series driver Burney Lamar, in the No. 31 RCR Team #3 Chevrolet, was leading the race, poised to earn his career-first ARCA RE/MAX Series victory, until he fell off the pace with suspension problems. Lamar led a total of 22 laps but finished 28th, seven laps down.

Defending race winner Steve Wallace led 56 laps, dominating at times by more than 11 seconds in the No. 61 Nu-South Lemonade-Hantz Group Dodge. He was running fourth when he brushed the wall, effectively ending his day.

Rookie Ryan Mathews finished second in the No. 22 Eddie Sharp Racing Dodge, earning his career-best finish.

"It feels great because in the last two races we've had top-five cars, but for whatever reason we haven't gotten it on paper at the end," said Mathews. "On that last restart I just held it to the wood and tried as hard as I could to go for the win. When T.J. and Kimmel got together I thought maybe I'd have a shot for the win. I knew that Sherman was good, but I wasn't going to give up. Now we get to go to Milwaukee, which is my home track and hopefully we'll pick up one more spot to get to victory lane."

Ryan Foster, in the No. 47 Frank Kimmel Racing Ford, finished third, also posting his career best finish. He was also the highest-finishing rookie. Brian Keselowski finished fourth in the Holloway Motorsports-Dusty's Collision Ford with rookie Brad Coleman, in the Johnny Carino's Italian Ford, trailing in fifth.

In addition to his victory, Sherman earned his career-first superspeedway Pork Pole award this weekend and became the 13th different ARCA RE/MAX Series winner in 15 events this season. Sherman is also one of eight first-time winners in 2006.

Sherman posted the fastest lap of the race, with a speed of 182.278 mph on lap 2.

Shawn Parker, crew chief for Coleman, earned the SK Hand Tool Crew Chief of the Race Award.

Todd Hansen battled his way from a 32nd starting position to 11th to earn the Hoosier Hard Charger honors.

The race made waves in the 2006 ARCA RE/MAX Series point chase, as Bobby Gerhart and Frank Kimmel are now tied for first place heading into the Allen Crowe Memorial 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds mile-dirt Sunday afternoon.
