FRANK KIMMEL WINS ARCA RE/MAX HANTZ GROUP 200 AT MIS
BROOKLYN, Mich. (June 17, 2005) - Frank Kimmel, the king of the ARCA RE/MAX Series, has been somewhat of a pauper at Michigan International Speedway when it comes to majestic success with only one of his ARCA-record 58 career victories coming at MIS.
But victory No. 59, which could help catapult the ARCA RE/MAX points leader to a record seventh series title, came in convincing fashion at Michigan today in the Hantz Group 200.
Kimmel, 43, took the lead from eventual third-place finisher Ken Weaver with 13 laps remaining in the 100-lap event and coasted to a 1.733-second triumph over Chad Blount, who battled back to finish second.
"We had a really fast car today," said Kimmel, whose last victory at MIS came in 1998, the year he captured his first ARCA RE/MAX title. "The car was especially fast when we were up in front with clean air. Once it gets late in the day, you can't wait around for things to happen."
Blount, who hurriedly left MIS after the race to fly to Kentucky Speedway where he will compete in the NASCAR Busch Series race tomorrow, said track position late in the race proved very costly.
"I had a bad restart on the second to last one of the race (lap 74), that gave me bad track position and I couldn't get it back,'' he said. "Our car was handling pretty good but we just came up one spot short. I don't know what to say. I'm just disappointed."
Erin Crocker, making her second ARCA/REMAX start this season, finished seventh, the second highest finish by a woman at MIS. Christi Passmore was fifth in last year's ARCA race at MIS.
"I definitely learned a lot today," said the Evernham Motorsports development driver. "It was my second race in a stock car and I got killed on my restarts at the beginning of the race," she said. "I just didn't know how aggressive you had to be without spinning the tires. I just learned a lot."
