Rookie Returns To Site Of Major Disappointment
August 9, 2004 (Mooresville, North Carolina) - Ryan Hemphill has had a dream season in the ARCA RE/MAX Series with six wins and five Pork Pole awards. However, things did not start out so dreamy for the 22-year-old rookie. The second race of this season saw Ryan set a new track record in qualifying and dominate the race before a late race encounter with a lap car resulted in a disappointing 15th place finish. This week Hemphill returns to the site of that race, Nashville Superspeedway, for a shot at redemption. He will pilot his #64 TRIMSPA DODGE in the running of the Waste Management 200 at the 1.33-mile concrete oval.
"This one has been marked on my calendar for some time now," said Hemphill. "The first race at Nashville was devastating to lose and I really want to make up for that. I have learned a lot since then and I am sure I would react differently next time - with a much better result."
The Apollo, Pennsylvania native has been on an incredible run since that first Nashville race back in early April. In the nine ARCA events he has competed in since then, Ryan has won six of them to go along with four additional pole awards.
This week Ryan and his TRIMSPA team will bring along with them the same car they ran in the previous Nashville race. This is also the #64 TRIMSPA DODGE that the team used in three of their wins - Kentucky, Charlotte and Kansas. The car was heavily damaged in the Michigan event as a result of a blown tire and the Braun Racing crew has rebuilt the car - with expectations being for a better overall car than before.
"I am really pumped up about this week," stated Ryan. "I know my guys have worked hard on repairing this car and will prepare a good set-up for me. We obviously have some real good notes to go by from the race earlier this year at the track. I really like the Nashville track and I won an All-Pro race here a few years ago - but I really want to make up for what happened in the first race here this year. All of us on this team are on top of our game right now and hopefully it will continue here throughout the end of the season."
Hemphill is very much on top of his game as he is coming off three consecutive wins in the ARCA RE/MAX Series (Kentucky, Gateway and Pocono) as he heads into Nashville this week. Still on his agenda is attempting to win the Superspeedway Challenge Championship and to add a few short track events to his schedule to secure the Rookie of the Year honor.
The green flag for the running of the 150 laps of the Waste Management 200 is scheduled to wave at 1:00 p.m. CST on Saturday with LIVE coverage on SPEED CHANNEL.
