Crum Brings Home Tenth Place Finish At the Rock: Car problems slow him down, but cannot hold him back
Statesville, NC: Jake Crum and the #1 Chevrolet was anxious leading into the first ever late model race held at Rockingham Speedway. With a tire going flat during their last race at Bristol Motor Speedway, a few weeks ago, the team was apprehensive to see if the tires would hold during the 70 lap race at the one mile track. Fortunately the tires held and Crum was on his "A" game enabling him to bring home a tenth place finish.
The weekend did not start as well as planned for Team Crum Racing. Without a lot of practice time, and with no experience on this track, the team struggled to get their setup right. When Crum headed to the track to qualify on Friday afternoon the car was very tight. He was still able to qualify 17th fastest in the 32 car field.
"We knew we had a long race ahead of us," said team owner Billy Crum. "It was important for Jake to stay focused and not try to push the car to hard. No one was really sure the tires would make the 70 lap race so we needed to conserve in the beginning."
Due to everyone's inexperience on the track several teams elected to work on their cars after qualifying moving Crum up to the 13th starting position. Crum did not waste any time to start gaining positions on the track. By the time the first caution was out he had already advance to 11th. On the restart he took two on the outside quickly and was up to ninth.
Crum fought hard to get around several cars and was able to work his way to seventh by midway through the race. Shortly after he advanced to seventh the car started having handling problems and Crum started moving backward through the field.
At the next caution the team brought the car in to see if the right front tire had gone flat. All the tires were still intact so the team made adjustments to the track bar to try to loosen up the car.
When the green flag waved at the restart there were only 18 laps to go in the race, Crum was running 27th. The team quickly found out their adjustments helped. Crum passed five cars before the caution flag waved on the same lap.
When that caution ended there were only 11 laps remaining and Crum was sitting in the 22nd position. Again he had a great start and before the next caution came out, three laps later Crum was in 15th.
With only five laps remaining when the green flag was out again Crum knew he had to work quickly and jumped up to 11th. However the race did not end there and there was yet another caution causing a green white checkered finish. When Crum crossed the finish line he had advanced another position and ended his day 10th.
"We just needed a few more laps," said Crum. "The crew did a great job getting the car fixed during the race. It was finally where it needed to be, we just ran out of time to make it any further through the field."
Billy Venturini, crew chief for Venturini Motorsports, was on hand during the race offering his newest signed driver advice throughout the race.
"Jake did a great job in the race," said Venturini. "Despite this being his first time on a bigger track he learns very quickly and was able to adapt to his surroundings. We are looking forward to seeing what he can do in an ARCA car."
Crum signed a letter of intent to run with Venturini Motorsports as a developmental driver in the ARCA RE/MAX series before the Bristol UARA race.
