Wettlaufer Thinking Positive Heading to Salem
St. Clair Shores, Michigan - - ARCA RE/MAX Series driver Ed Wettlaufer will join the rest of the tour for the final short track event of the 2004 looking to improve on their respectable 23rd place finish at Lake Erie Speedway last month.
Wettlaufer, along with his Chassisdyne Motorsport team has had a lot of struggles trying to prove themselves on the ARCA RE/MAX Series tour, but the dedication that himself and his all-volunteer crew have sacrificed seem to be paying off.
"We've definitely had some problems with the motor," said the driver of the No. 40 Chassisdyne Dodge. "Every time I feel we are making a gain, another problem seems to arise, putting us behind the eight ball."
The team arrived at Toledo Speedway earlier this month, looking to prove that Lake Erie wasn't a fluke, but a hiccup inside the motor prior to the start of practice had the team thinking ahead.
Instead of taking a risk, the team took another step back to make a jump forward. That jump included getting ready for his Salem debut this weekend.
"I've been wanting to compete at Toledo for the longest time, but I wasn't about to put this team father behind. We know what the problem was, while it was fixable, we decided it was in the best interest to forgo Toledo and focus on Salem."
With the engine problem now corrected, Wettlaufer looks to make his second start of the season at the legendary 0xda6ce oval. "Salem Speedway is a very competitive track. We have to be on top of our game this weekend, that's a fact," continued the engineer by trade.
"I'm expecting much like Toledo to be facing a very competitive and stout field this weekend, but we're ready."
For the Chassisdyne Motorsport team, the goal for this weekend is simple, qualify and race. "We're not going to have a provisional to fall back, so we have to make the show on time, I think with the notes we have, and the guidance of my crew chief Eric Smay, I think we have a shot," continued the 32-year old driver.
Ed continued "If we can repeat our performance of Lake Erie, I'll be happy, but if we can better it, which I think we can, we won't be the only team celebrating Saturday night."
However, if the team was to endure another problem this weekend, they'll take it as another learning experience. "Racing is always about learning. You learn inside the car, outside the car, before the race, during the race, and even after the race. While I know we're going to give 150% this weekend, if things don't go our way, we won't frown, we'll take it in stride and look ahead to 2005."
During the ARCA RE/MAX Series off season, the team hopes to switch from Dodge to Chevrolet, building a new body and retrieving a competitive engine with hopes of competing in the full 2005 ARCA short track program.
The Eddie Gilstrap Motors ARCA Fall Classic by Advance Auto Parts is the 21st of 22 events on the 2004 ARCA RE/MAX Series schedule. This weekend will mark the second time the teams have competed at Salem Speedway this season. First round practice is on tap Saturday afternoon with qualifying also on the agenda that afternoon, with the race set to take the green flag later that night. The Speed Channel will broadcast the race with same-day coverage starting at 10:30 PM EST.
