OVERVIEW
Bryan Clauson grabbed his first career ARCA RE/MAX Series victory on Friday night in the Gateway ARCA 150 at Gateway (Ill.) International Raceway. Eddie Sharp Racing teammates, Josh Wise and Michael McDowell, finished second and third, respectively.
Marc Mitchell and the #4 Ergon Dodge finished 30th in Friday night's event. He was a teammate to Bryan Clauson. Mitchell's three race "mini-season" in the Ergon Dodge from Cunningham Motorsports ended just as it began last month at the Nashville Superspeedway. The Tallahassee, Fla. native had a car capable of winning the race, but he was collected in another wreck that was not his fault.
Mitchell was fast from the time the team unloaded the car on Friday morning. He was the third fastest car in the morning practice session. Mitchell followed that up by sticking his Ergon Dodge Charger on the outside of the front row while admitting that he left some speed out on the track during qualifying. This had everyone feeling great about another top-five finish, at least.
When the green flag fell, Mitchell was content to let the race come to him. Crew chief Mark Gibson set the car up to remain neutral on long runs. Mitchell stayed inside the top-five until he was summoned down pit road for adjustments during a lap 22 caution period.
With one of the quickest cars on the track, Mitchell drove back up to the fifth position when he as involved in wreck getting in to turn 3. He did get back on the track to pick up some owner points for the #4, but he soon retired after having run only 69 of the 120 laps.
"This is just unbelievable," said a frustrated Mitchell. "To have a fast car, only to get taken out of two of the last three races, I mean, that is hard to swallow. The bad part about it is the guy that ran us over had a really fast car too. I would have liked to have had the chance to race him for the win. Instead we both ended up behind the wall."
"I really had high aspirations for this opportunity that I had to get in the Cunningham Motorsports Dodge," continued. "This car was a rocket ship tonight. These guys don't deserve to have races end like this. Ergon doesn't deserve to have races end like this. But my season is not over."
Mitchell will be back in the familiar #93 Ergon Chevrolet for the Chicagoland ARCA 200 at the Chicagoland Speedway on Saturday, September 8th.
