Rookie Cale Gale Holds Off Steve Wallace For Gateway Victory

MADISON IL (7-28-06)--Cale Gale, in only his second career start, persevered through multiple late-race restarts to win the thrilling Shop 'n Save 150 ARCA RE/MAX Series race at Gateway Int'l Raceway Friday night.

"You get to thinking after this restart, and then this one, and this one; you just get a little anxious," said Gale. "It's hot out there tonight. I think the crew put me in a good position, with two fresh tires, and we were able to hold on for the lap. The only way we were going to beat Stephen was to get out front ahead of him and that's what we did. Once we did we stayed out front. I really have to thank Chairman Billy Cypress and Director of Racing Terry Willey of the Miccosukee Tribe of Florida."

Steve Wallace, Brad Coleman, Pete Shepard III and Jeremy Clements rounded out the top-five.

Gale, who is part of a driver development program for Phoenix Racing, pitted on lap 77 under the direction of team owner James Finch and took over the top spot on lap 90. The 150-mile/120-lap event was lengthened 22 laps to accommodate three green-white-checker finishes for several late-race cautions.

Gale continually held off Wallace through it all, leading a total of 55 laps in his No. 50 Miccosukee Tribe of Florida Indians Dodge, while the field scrambled behind him.

Wallace, driving for his father, NASCAR Nextel Cup veteran Rusty Wallace, settled for second in the No. 61 Nu South Lemonade-Hantz Group Dodge after leading 64 laps.

Brewco Motorsports developmental driver Brad Coleman finished third in the No. 62 Johnny Carino's Ford after leading four laps.

"I was changing what I was doing on every restart because they were changing what they were doing," said Coleman. "I was trying to anticipate what they were going to do. This Johnny Carino's Ford was really good all night."

Chase Miller finished 33rd after a lap 55 incident. The Dodge Motorsports driver earned his career First Pork Pole award earlier in the day and led five laps.

Burney Lamar, driving a No. 31 Richard Childress Racing Chevrolet led 14 laps but finished 28th after his distributor failed.

In all, the caution flag waved ten times for a total of 64 laps and took two hours, eight minutes and forty-eight seconds to complete.

Shawn Parker, crew chief of the No. 62 Brewco Motorsports Ford, earned the SK Hand Tool Crew Chief of the Race award. Jeremy Clements earned the Hoosier Tire Hard Charger of the race award advancing 19 positions, finishing 5th after starting 24th.
