With a little help from his friend- Carrying decals on his car in honor of his late friend, fellow Busch Series competitor Adam Petty, Lyndon Amick scored the most emotional win of his racing career at last Saturday's ARCA (Automobile Racing Club of America) EasyCare Vehicle Service Contracts 100 race. Driving the No. 99 Pontiac owned by Winston Cup veteran Ken Schrader, Amick survived a one-lap shootout in only his second series start to post his first career ARCA victory at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
Amick's Pontiac carried a tribute to Petty in the form of a hood decal, a larger version of the decal Busch drivers placed on their cars at New Hampshire International Raceway. In addition, the quarter panels and rear of the car displayed a special phone number (1-888-44-PETTY) that fans and friends can call to make charitable donations in memory of Petty.
Looking Ahead- The Team Amick Engine program, considered to be one of the strongest in the Busch garage, tackled a different animal when they were asked to build the motor for the Schrader / Amick ARCA entry. It was the first time that the engine department, led by veteran engine builder Hayden "Bo" Montgomery, had ever attempted to build a 12:1 compression motor in-house. The results were promising, to say the least.
The Name Game- The car that Team Amick is bringing to the Lowe's Motor Speedway has been nicknamed "Buff," after a character on World Championship Wrestling (WCW). It's the same car that Amick drove to an 11th place finish at California a few weeks ago, and the car handles so well, Amick feels, "It 's the stuff."
Driver- Lyndon Amick On his ARCA win: "It was an emotional night for me. I didn't want to see it come down to a one-lap shootout, but when it did, I just remembered Adam (Petty) and how smoothly he drove in his ARCA win here (September, 1998). I tried to drive that last lap like he would have, and it worked for us. I know Adam was with me in that car, and I'm honored that I got to help him get to Victory Lane at Charlotte one more time. This one was for the Petty' s."
"Bo and his guys at the Team Amick Engine Shop really gave me some horsepower to work with. They've never, as a team, had to build a Winston Cup-style motor, but they handled the job. We hope to move up to use that size motor in a few years, so it's nice to know the engine program is ready to handle the switch. Those guys are awesome."
On his confidence level: "We've only made the Busch race one time in five tries here. As a driver, struggling like that will make you start to doubt yourself a little. But, we had a great test session here earlier this month, and that, along with winning the ARCA race, let me know that the driver wasn 't the only reason we missed those other races. It's nice to know that I can get around this track, and anytime you win a race, it's going to help your confidence. For the first time, I can honestly say I'm excited about coming here, because I think we've got a legitimate shot at winning this thing."
