Walt Brannen and Team Ready to Overachive at Michigan
Rebuilding a Good Racecar to Make it Great is Nothing Unusual for #65 Team
ELKO, GA (June 15, 2005) -- Walt Brannen and his numer-65 Brack Maggard Racing team will be back in action this weekend as the ARCA RE/MAX Series heads to Michigan Speedway. The team is hand picking their events as part of a limited schedule in 2005 and after a few growing pains; they are ready to show the racing world what they are made of.
"We are really working on stepping up our program," said Brannen. "We started off great this year and have gone downhill a little bit with a few struggles, but I think that we can really show what we have at Michigan. A good team can make it through a good struggle. It will show what we're made of."
The struggles that Brannen refers to are nothing unusual for a new team.
"We lost our crew chief and then we lost car chief. Now Robbie Benton is our crew chief and I'm the car chief. I actually like that. It gives me more responsibility. We had some communication issues and now we've figured out how to mesh together. We're a lot more confident going to the racetrack now."
This 21-year-old driver doesn't want there to be anything average with his racing career. His team is made up of overachievers as well, so they aren't easy on themselves. That's a good thing because the young group of up and comers want to showcase their talents.
"We're a lot different because we're all young. I'm 21 years old and the oldest person on the team is 25 or 26 years old. There's not a lot of experience here. We're all trying to learn the same things together. We're going through a big learning curve, but once we hit our marks, I think that those other guys' heads will be spinning."
And the future looks bright for the #65 team.
"Brack Maggard is trying to build a team that can go Busch Series racing. That's his goal and I hope that I'm still his driver. It's great to be a part of it being born."
The team tested at Michigan last week, but they weren't satisfied with their results so they went home and rebuilt what many would consider a perfectly good racecar. But that's nothing new to this team either.
"We built a brand new car pretty much. It was a Yates car, but we redid it from the ground up. Even since we tested, we rebuilt the car again from the crossmembers up."
Brannen has high hopes heading into Michigan.
"I know that it's smart not to set your goals too high, but we tested and we were really fast. I've got no doubt in mind mine that we should qualify and finish in the top three. That's what we'd like to do up there. I think that we're really going to shine."
The Hantz Group 200 at Michigan is set to go green at 5:15pm on Friday and will be televised live on SPEED Channel.
